It’s made out of teak wood with African blackwood accents. Affectionately deemed “ol table leg” It’s reeded and has lovely tone. This is a one off and is the only teak chanter I have ever heard of. If it was a blackwood chanter It would retail for £750.00.
I’ve never seen a teak chanter either.
Who is that maker? £750.00 (US$1450) would nearly buy a fully keyed Gallagher concert chanter (in ebony).

Always a good idea, you never know what some of them boyo’s have in the shop from one moment to the next… trade ins, cancelled orders etc… etc…
Are you the self-same Tim Benson that posted some clips a couple of years back of yourself and a fiddler playing The Road to Lisdoonvarna/The Holly Bush, plus the Southwest Wind and something or other? Lovely stuff, it resides on my MP3 gizmo. Any more where that came from?

My budget has been blown on a family holiday in Ireland, otherwise I’d be making an offer on this chanter.
That’s me. I’ve been meaning to get more stuff recorded. If I do it will probably be posted on myspace, www.myspace.com/timbenson. Those two tracks are on there now.
I recorded it with a Seth Gallagher concert set. A couple years ago I scaled way back on gigs and I sold that set, and bought one of his flat sets (B). When reeded up right, they are amazing. I’ve never been disappointed with SG’s pipes, flat or concert pitch. They have a distinct feel, like they have really “deep roots”. You can feel the chanter in your hands if you have the reed on the open side, and then there’s lots of room for expression.
I’ll look forward to those new clips, especially in B. I play one of Seth’s sets in C, and I know what you mean. He went for the slightly wider-bore design with the C chanter (modeled on a Quinn chanter, I believe). the drones have always been rock steady. After my making numerous less-than-successful reeds, a friend of mine made this freaky shovel of a thing with almost no bark left on it, but perfect for the dry climate here. I’ve been loving that buzz ever since.

I went to visit Seth, and he had a boxwood C set that was one of the nicest sets of pipes I had ever beheld or played. His own make. The balance across the set was extraordinary. It was like a little organ. I don’t think I’ve played a set of pipes much better than that. I could’ve played it for hours. The look of the boxwood is incredible. I think Gay McKeon may be playing it in one of the clips on Seth’s page.

That was the chanter that Seth brought to our Tíonol last June (he borrowed my set to plug it into, as he had a number of other things to schlepp along). He played it in our concert along with David Power - http://faculty.weber.edu/mstevenson1/piping/slpc2006/home.htm - what a fantastic sound, with two C sets going!
