I hate the Windows’ USB device recognition fUtility.
Have you tried turning it off and back on again?
s1m0n if you are still having this problem: betimes in my experience the USB ports themselves will go wonky. If you have established there is no hardware fault, then please ignore everything else I have to say. My next step would be to A) if you have a floppy port, download and use Tom’s RTBT rescue disk to test the USB port under Linus. or B). invest ina Linux magazine and procure a bootable CD and test the port ( I suppose you could download a disk image and burn one of the Rescue Linux cd’s, or even a full blown version of Knoppix.

But most distros are available for free everywhere on the internet! Simply download a usual image and create a bootable USB stick.
