digital camera help

What does it mean when it says ‘device not found’, even though I have the camera hooked up to the computer and the cord is in solidly and everything? I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. I’m thinking of buying a new USB cord…

Probably means your USB cable is damaged.

Have you used this before?

Yes. I used it for about three months then didn’t plug it in for a while, and now it’s not working. I just hope it’s the cord and not the camera itself that has the problem…

Maybe the software in the PC has become corrupted - might be worth re-installing that.

Do you have more than one memory card for the camera? Try changing that to see if it’s the card.

I’ve done both of those things already.

Those cords are notoriously buggy. Spend $25 and get a USB media drive thingie. I don’t know what the industry name is, but it’s like a little disk drive for flash cards. Pop the flash card out of the camera, into the drive, then open up Windows Explorer and you’ll have the ability to manipulate the flash card the same way you would a hard drive. It will even show up, in Exlporer, as a separate drive letter.

I like to preview my pictures on the flash card, copy the ones I want to keep to my hard drive, delete the others off of the card, then pop it back into the camera.

$25 is the low-end. You could spend a lot more than that, but they’re such low-tech devices, I can’t see spending more.

Well I’m out of ideas, apart from a new connector as Jeff suggests.

That’s because YOU SUCK!

kidding. Thanks, yall.

If you have more than one USB port on your computer try plugging your cord there.
The same thing happened to me awhile back and when I plugged the camera cord into the other USB port, it worked. Don’t ask me why.

Martin, that avatar looks a lot like you.

Cran, are you using the software that came with the camera? I don’t use it. XP automatically detects the camera when it gets turned on and does the rest.

Seconded. That happened with my computer as well. Good idea, Rod.

I have had the same problem with the USB connector that I use for the photo flash cards. Most plugs, unless they are gold, will loose their connectivity due to oxidation with time. Merely plulling out the USB plug from your computer and reinserting it may solve the problem. Also, you might try spray electrical cleaner on both the receptacle and the plug. Do this with your computer unplugged from power.
