Willy Clancy and Stor Mo Chroi

Just received the newest NPU publication and found an exciting reference to Clancy’s version of this air, his favorite, and a recorded version of it, with him singing it and then playing it.

It is supposed to be posted on the NPU site, but there’s no way to access it… anyone have a clue? I can’t even get to the tune archive. All I get is those 2 little conjoined squares in the upper left hand corner.

I think Terry gave an exact URL. Did you try typing that in?

Patrick.

I just got the same result. The NPU Archive => Tune Archive page is unavailable.

I haven’t received my copy of the latest yet. What’s the URL so I can try later?

Thx,

djm

Thanks, Patrick… you’re right! I was confused about the blank spaces in the last part.

Nice singing, but where’s the piping part?

djm, here:

Elbogo, thanks. Got it. Makes you wonder how many more unreleased recordings there are that someone is sitting on somewhere. I just checked the commercial releases. If this is his favourite air, he doesn’t seem to have recorded it.

djm

Nice of them to make that available to the general public, are there more sound files in the Tune Archive as well? All I get are the weird ASCII dots.

 Yeah, I tried to do a directory listing but got blocked. Obviously, this is not a generally accessable directory, and is used on an ad hoc basis by setting permissions on a per file basis. I suppose we could try to hack it, but maybe we should let NPU explain themselves first (?).

djm

Ahhh… but he did.
“A Stor Mo Chroi” is the poem that forms the lyrics. The tune they are set to is much older and is known as “Bruachna Carraige Baine” Willy recorded it on the CD “The Minstrel From Clare”.

Jeff

There’s got to be a lot of airs called Bruach Na Carraige Baine… I know two, and this would be the third, then.

g

I don’t know about the others, but this one is the Stor Mo Chroi one.

Jeff

Anima, good call. I’ll have to check it out (the piped version on the Minstrel CD vs the sung A Stor Mo Chroi mp3). I wonder if Willie called the piped version A Stor Mo Chroi, and the editor of the CD liner notes came up with the alternate title (?).

Sorry guys to be a kill joy, but think somebody should point out that this recording hasn’t been made to the general public has it now. The url for it was printed in Na Piobaire, and sent to the MEMBERS of NPU. Posting the url on a site such as this is somewhat bad taste. NPU takes a lot of stick for not offering its members much, and then when it does something special lke this, people start giving it away for free! People please remeber membership has its privalages!
Pol.

Bouli, I am a member, and I think that those who haven’t joined yet should be aware that little gems like this exist as part of being a member of NPU - not to mention the numerous transcriptions, reports on historic pipers, etc. and to top it all off, a discount on piping CDs and music books.

Membership in NPU is very inexpensive, and can be got from their web site, so its easy to join. There’s no excuse for not supporting NPU. If you can afford a case of beer, you can afford a membership.

djm

…besides, how else can some members access the music archives?
