Edited to say I believe he trills using the G, d AGAGA F.
Yes, Thanks. Thats some mighty fast fingerwork there! Very descriptive word Trill. ![]()
Speaking of ‘what is he doing?’, I just came across a recording of Willie Clancy playing the tune on a recording called “The Breeze from Erin,” and such crannannannannanns I never heard before! I can’t figure out for the life of me what’s happening there; defies physics and boggles my tiny brain.
It’s the D cranns at the beginning of the D (4th) part.; if you want to download the recording (tho you have to DL the whole album I think), it’s here:

Illumination is more than welcome!
Brilliant album, I have it on vinyl and cassette! just put it on..
Cathy,
I don’t trust the download site. Can you record and reproduce here the track of interest to you. Might be able to help then.
I assume it is the tune An Phuis Phluich played by Willy Clancy that interests you. I could look at other recordings of the same tune by him, and try to work out whats going on - as could others, better qualified.

That sight is legitimate. It has a large selection of classic recordings . The guys buy these of ebay and the like, rip them and upload them . I know this cos I bid against them one time, lost the album; taking flight by Bobby Casey, but through mentioning it on a forum got in contact. These are genuine people doing a great service to the worldwide community of traditional music lovers. The stuff they have up there is rare and very hard to trace. Dont worry, I have downloaded many albums from there . IMO and experience Its safe. You can always double check with your SP software. There is a legitimate pedigree with what they are doing linked [ in some way] to Bernie Stocks.
Hi Cathy,
If it’s the same recording of An Phis Fliuch that is on the recent Double CD of Clancy’s piping then the cranns are made up of two quadrupled cranns in succession, both starting and ending on an A grace to low D. This means it is essential that the piper play two A graces in quick succession between the two crann movements. The pattern is thus:
ADGDFDAD / ADGDFDAD / C nat and so on…
It’s one crann where you really do have to work the fingers “like pistol shots” to quote Leo Rowsome (I think).
Cheers,
DavidG

It’s not legitimate at all, but just another Blogspot site which specialises in making available recordings still covered by copyright.
Bad bottom D, is what you’re hearing.
I think he had a B chanter that suffered from auto-crann on some of the tracks.
Much food for thought, here. For the nonce I’m going with ausdag’s analysis, I think … only because the mysterious burble is so precise, and only happens at that spot.
As for that site, it seems most everything up there is out of print at least, though I don’t know about the copyright. I’ve found it a wonderful resource. Like FiddlerWill, I figured it was connected with Bernie somehow. I hope I haven’t caused anyone any trouble – I’ve learned so much from the music I’ve found there. Most of it is stuff I didn’t even know existed and am I quite certain I would never have been able to hear otherwise!
Absolutely Cathy a magnificent resource, Wonderful to be able to access these rare recordings. I am so thankfull to the guys who put this stuff up. If I could buy it , I would, in fact I do where and whenever possible.
