whistles in "El pozo de Arán" by Carlos Nunez

Anyone can tell us which whistles (what keys) Carlos Nunez plays in “El pozo de Arán”?

Thanks

I found this clip on youtube of the tune http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mNNUMBoOag

Carlos plays Jon Swayne whistles and Colin Goldie Overtons. I have no clue which key the tune is played in but from the size of the instrument it could be a Low C or C# or possibly an Low Eb (although the whistle in the clip shown is not short enough to my eyes to be an Eb?). He also has Bass Bb and A but the whistle shown is too small for these keys. Sorry Colin is not in so I cannot ask him to tell me the key, maybe someone else is able to jump in her to tell you the key now.

He also plays the r&*#(!@r. (shudder)

Does anyone have the CD? It would be simple to check in the booklet…

Recorder or no, that’s a beautiful tune.

Anyone know the name of it?

St. Patrick’s An Dro, you can find it on “Un Galician En Bretagne”, track 9. It is one of Colin’s favorite tunes, I also really like it.

Thank you Brigitte  I was telling my wife that it sounded like an An Dro. I’ll add that CD to my Christmas list.

Someone who has the CD “Mayo Longo” told me the only thing written on the booklet was “Whistles → Carlos” :sniffle:

I have played whit him, For that song now he use a modern alto by Mollenhauer

Just tried to play along with the video - assuming no pitch-shifting with the recording, sounds like the piece is in E (4 sharps), so presumably an E whistle, or he’s half-holing D# and G# on a D. I think the gaita is in A, so E wouldn’t be a big headache for that. Ghastly, posy video and mulchy pop number! (To my taste.) Still, guess a pro has to take the work where it comes. He’s a grand player, whatever.

He doesn’t use a whistle, in that video he use a mollenhauer alto recoder!

The instrument most shown in the video is unquestionably an Overton whistle. Sounds like it too - slightly fuzzy upper register. There is though always the possibility that the recording was done with one instrument and the mime for the video with another. Are we discussing the same video? When I tried to play along I thought the range went below that of a Treble (Alto) Recorder (bottom note F above “middle” C).

sorry wrong video for me! you are right

I don’t think you were wrong. Watch carefully and you’ll see that he mostly plays an Overton but once or twice you see him playing a Mollenhauer Modern alto. The Mollenhauer looks like the rosewood with the E foot (like mine). You’ll have to slow the film up.

3.18 into the video is one of the times you’ll see the Mollenhauer, albeit a fleeting glimse.
