I was looking at the recent threads, and I was wondering if anyone else noticed the fact that whistle related threads are now very rare, there’s more “OT” threads than anything else, and the rest is just kinda-on-topic stuff. Maybe we should stop adding “OT” to non whistle threads, and add “OT” to whistle threads? Just a thought! ![]()
Please add “OT” to this topic.

It’s already there, just at the tail end.
Hmmm,
OT: Whistle related threads are now “OT” ?
Sounds right!
Yes Beth but so does “Oak whistle trade” but it’s not OT now is it… a matter of fact they put in an extra t in “trade” just to make it all the more confusing.

Maybe it’s a sign that every conceivable thing to be said about them has been said several times [see the popular subjects thread] so that you all have to bite the bullet and go of line and actually learn to play them well. Now there’s a novel idea. ![]()
I’ve noticed that as well. I don’t post often, but I like reading the on topic threads. And with so many off topic threads it makes it a little difficult to keep up. I would honestly enjoy this message board alot more if the topic were focused on whistles with the occasional off topic thread coming up, rather than the other way around. Just my thoughts.
“Maybe it’s a sign that every conceivable thing to be said about them has been said several times”
Good point.
Actually, two years ago the forum was a lot more (beside some pictures of cats and trips now and then) whistle related. The good old time!
Well, I guess I’m part of the problem, today. Sorry if I’m contributing to a problem, here. Just had to let everyone know about the shameless opportunism of others on my OT post of the day. Oh, and apologies for my earthy language.
N, grrrr
As long as the OT posts are so indicated, or are obviously OT, based on the title, I would prefer that everyone just continue as they have been. Some of the OT posts have been extremely entertaining. If I’m not interested in a particular OT topic, I know I can just pass it over without missing any important whistle info. On the other hand, I’m finding a terrific amount of good whistle stuff, even though there’s OT stuff too.
Best wishes,
Jerry
P.S. The fact that it’s often the OT threads that get the most readership and participation indicates that those OT threads are serving a need for people who frequent this board.
This appears to be a social community in addition to being a place for people to exchange whistle information, which seems quite natural considering the informal, social nature of whistling itself and the relaxed, playful environment Dale’s created here.

I’m just a lurker, really, but I enjoy the OT threads because I have covered most of the basic ground that the site and knowledge base had to offer.
Thanks to it, I have discovered great sources of printed music, cds and equipment. Occasionally, someone posts a new link that is of interest or recommends a cd, which are On Topic, I guess.
I hold no illusion that the site will be as exciting to me as it once was, when I was so hungry for whistle info. I couldn’t believe there was so much interest then.
But I sure got some great whistles thanks to you folks. I enjoy the fellowship and contribute to the OTs because it’s o-kay.
Besides, when you whistle a bunch and have no one to resonate with in immediate environment, the fellowship is great.
It will never be like the “good old days” if you are yourself an oldtimer.
Adding later: I have noticed that many whistlers have gone on to flute. Now they have tons more tech-talk to hash over as the variety, cost and character of the instruments seem to be infinitely more fruitful for intellectual mastication. Pretty on-topic over there, complete with arguments, etc etc.
Signed,
The I never-will-play-flute-because-the-whistle-is-challenge-enough Weekender

Let me up the ante here and invite people to Play a tune on their whistle and post it to Clips and Snips. (Just so we know you actually own one and aren’t using this board for the purpose of luring young innocents into debauchery.)

Heh. And even this thought isn’t new:
“What has been will be again,
what has been done will be done again;
there is nothing new under the sun.”

Richard
I’m not sorry!

Tony, are you calling out the posers?
(Not sorry for posting stupid threads… I have nothing to do with Innocents… or their debauchery.)
The board would be dead without the fluff.
As soon as someone asked a question, (which have all been asked before) one of you cranky people would curtly tell them to go take a flying search.

Yeah, that one goes back 3,000 years, doesn’t it? Or last week, when I read again. That one never goes out of date.

Someone once said:
Everything that can be said has been said already. But since almost nobody ever listens, it has to be repeated over and over again.
Who said that? Sorry, I wasn’t listening.
One or two experienced people who dispense advice on this board get frustrated and complain that it is pointless. They should work in a job in which one is paid to give advice to people whose job it is to listen. My observation from areas in which I am an acknowledged expert: about three in every ten listen and maybe one takes the advice. Oh, and of those who don’t listen, about four do just fine without your advice.
Yea,
Me mam used to all ways say.
If you can’t say any thing nice don’t say anything at all!
And me mom sez “repetition is the mother of teaching”…
There are many books I’ve read twice, and understood differently on second reading. Like my old grammar book ![]()
And what about some movies I saw several times, each time finding something new to watch?
Believing things need not be repeated, or circumlocuted, works only for those who also believe a given individual’s personality is a static thing, which wouldn’t evolve with age, weather and time of the day. Not to mention tide and moon phases…
OT’s, and even rant, are part of what forms this here community.
Otherwise, all the Poststructural would have only the usefulness (and sex-appeal
I’ll always advocate the superiority of the HH’s Guide over the Encyclopædia Galactica.
