What does "OT" mean?

Go ahead and laugh at me… but please tell me what it means too! :boggle:

“Off Topic”, as in not pertaining to anything to do with whistles.

Which is what happens to every thread on the board eventually, regardless o whether it’s whistle related or not.

Octavus Terribullis. It was a terrible eight armed dinosaur from the Cretasius period. Preyed on goats and people sitting on toilets mainly, they presume. Died out about the time Henry Ford invented the condom.

Like that

…and here, all this time, I thought it stood for “obscure thinking”. :stuck_out_tongue:

There is of course a rousing chorus of cheers everytime someone manages to mention whistles or whistle related matters in an OT: thread.

So, that would make this thread Off Topic then.

I actually believe this forum has addopted a slightly less stringent def in that any discussion of music style or instruments is On Topic.

I thought the whistles were the OT things. It’s the other way around?

Really?..and here I thought that Ocatvus Terribullis was a Roman Emperor.

There is just no end to the things you can learn here.

All the Best,

Tom

That was Octavius. Not Octavus.
Octavius was the Roman Emporer who invented the girdle. You remember him. That famous line where Brutus asks him how many eggs he had for breakfast. And he said “Et two, Brut’e”

Oh, right, how could I forget. Octavius was the same dude that taught Nero how to play the fiddle. I really like Nero’s version of “The Hotfoot Jig.”

Tom

Hey! Now that some one has mentioned ‘jig’ does that make this a NON-OT thread now? A REFORMED-OT thread??? What!? What?! What?! :really: :really: :really:

It’s become a NOT thread…Now On Topic…

That’s pretty good!

Actually, though… doesn’t that make this thread OT again???

Oh, I’m SO confused!!!

Leel- let me explain it in simple terms.

first, NOT- “Now On Topic”- means that a thread that is OT and then gets a whistle mention becomes On Topic, as this primarily a whistle forum, but you can’t say OT for On Topic, because OT cleary means Off Topic, thus the origination of NOT (Now On Topic).

Then again, the contrarian view would be that if a post starts off OT and then gets a whistle mention to make it a NOT, as the original post’s topic was not whistle related in the first place, a whistle mention would actually make it an OT² squared, because now the post is Off Topic from the orignal Off Topic topic.

Simple enough, right?

Now, I would like to add some confusion to this topic.

The real question is- since this is a Post-Structural Whistle Board, is there any such thing as an OT post? Every post has a Topic, so saying a post is OT- Off Topic- is wrong, no? Sure, it’s not a whistle topic, but it is a topic. So, in order to stay true to the entire OT-NOT theory, what is really needed, and I have it on good authority that scientists are nearing completion of their research, is an acronym to replace OT on this board, something that reflects the board’s true spirit, to signify & recognize a post that while not a whistle related topic, is still a topic to the original poster.

So, I to you fellow Chiffers here today I say, “ask not what OT means to internet forums in general, but ask what OT means to this board in particular.” I challenge you here to come up with an appropriate acronym for this board.

All the Best, Tom

OT
As you all know realy stands for.
Old Tart :astonished:
As OF. stands for
Old Break wind

Since most of our threads drift Off Topic eventually, maybe it’s time to change our sign convention? Perhaps we should label the the threads that are On Topic as “OT” and the off-topic ones as Not On Topic (NOT)?

(“Maybe if we run away a little faster, we’ll confuse them!”) :boggle:  :boggle:  :smiling_imp:

Umm, wasn’t that what my very concise and clear message earlier kind of intimated, to some extent?
