I’m thinking in a D boxwood one. My first choice would be Eamonn Curran but I’ve heard good things about Andy May, Martin Preshaw or Gordon Galloway.
Opinions please and if someone know the mail or website from Curran or May, I don’t find nothing on inet.
Thnaks for all.
In many senses, not all chanters are equal. You really need to decide the sort of sound you prefer. If you have a style of playing in mind, find a chanter that will give you a soundscape suitable for that style.
I did have Andy’s email once when he brought my Andreas Rogge C Fullset in Snakewood May 2005.
username for Andy May on chiff and fipple is andymay
Andy is on http://www.myspace.com/andythepipesmay
I have not played a Galloway chanter but I have some of his regs and they are great with good workmanship. I had an Eamonn Curran boxwood chanter which was really nice to play and sounded brilliant but had to sell to fund the afore mentioned regs. I have a Martin Preshaw blackwood chanter which , with the right reed is really something special. I have not played an Andy May chanter but I’ve heard good things about him. Don’t think you’ll go far wrong with any of the makers mentioned.
Its good to ask for feedback on a pipe-makers overall quality, customer service and time lines; however, IMHO there is no substitute for getting a chanter into your hands and playing it. I went through several chanters - all very good - before finally settling in on the one that I have now. The final selling point for me (all other things being roughly equal) was how this chanter just fits into my hands like it wants to be played.
So if you are serious about any pipemaker’s work then do what it takes to actually try the chanters out!
Thank you for the opinions and the contacts.
Recently I’ve bought a Childress concert pitch blackwood full set, I’m happy with it, the chanter have a powerfull sound and well in tune, for the sessions is perfect, nobody sounds more than me, jeejeje but I would like to have another type of tone as well and I think the tone of boxwood is very special. One of my asturian pipes is from boxwood and the sound is very sweet, and if you want play asturian music with UP, you need a couple of keys, actually I have only a Cnat key.
No big deal ! its just your “great news” reminded me of Oscar night when all the nominees hide their disappointment by smiling politely and applauding even when the other guy wins. For once wouldn’t you like to see some actor jump up and start ranting on that the oscar should be his/hers.
Ha ha yes i’d love to see that at the Oscars!! Or even better at the Folk Awards!!
But anyway the OP has managed to order the chanter of his dreams from his preferred maker, Eamonn’s a great guy and makes lovely stuff. The sun is shining for once in Newcastle and i’m just eating a cheese scone.
I have an Andy May Boxwood chanter. I love it. I’ve played Rogge, Langan, Froment and Benedict Koehler, and Andy’s work is right up there in quality! All the chanters I had so far were cool, but i already sold two of them…Andy’s is still with me and is the one I play most these days! Lovely feel in the hands, great action and sweet sound. He is a fine reedmaker too!
The chanter he made for me is based on a Rowesome I believe, got 4 keys and silver plated chanter top. Looks really nice with the yellow boxwood! I’ll make a wee video some day so who ever is interested in how it sounds may get a quick impression!
