Is there a good folk music
place here? Thanks
Jim - I’m not sure, but go up on the Lark in the Morning site to see whether they have a shop in or around LA. The one I know of is in Mendocino, a few hours north of San Francisco, way too far. I know there’s another one, but don’t recall where.

…or Water Weasel, Burke, Copeland, Overton, Sindt, to name a few, to buy in Louisiana (LA).

Sorry! I meant los angeles. I did
look at lark in the morning, but
they’re not here. Thanks
Jim,
Since I live in LA COunty, I guess that qualifies me to answer. McCabes in Santa Monica is the biggest local whistle dealer. Santa Monica Music carries Gemerations. Sam Ash carries Acorn.
Send a private message to Cerrabus. he has a list of SoCal whistle dealers. Until I find a good wholesale source for whistles, my store will NOT be selling whistles for a while. Lark wants me so spend $200 on my first order!
Thanks! It certainly would seem
that there is room here for
a good all round folk instrument
store. Best
Jim, McCabes is the best folk shop around. I have seen some amazing shows there, so keep an eye out for those. Karen Casey is playing real soon, if not tonight. I saw something on Lunasa as well, that either cam and went or is in the near future. Bad news though, it’s a guitar shop. They do have a whole bunch of other instruments, but the main focus is on guitars. Last time I was there they had Gen’s and Phil Hardy’s mass produced whistles. I purchased a cool bamboo flute in D at McCabes awhile back, I remember they had a hand full in various keys.
The only other place I can think of is also a guitar shop that is about a quarter the size of McCabes. It is down south in Mission Viejo, about an hour from LA if traffic is good. The place is called Shade Tree. Last time I was there they had Gen’s, Clarkes, Ralph Sweets, and an Abel that sat for some time. You should call them first. (949) 364-5270. They hold mom & pop hours. Good luck.
Aww shoot! I hoped you were talking about Louisiana! Then, where else can you live when your hubby is a coastal oil geologist! But a local shop ACTUALLY sells clarkes and oaks here! So we’re not all the way out.
I just lost my last “Purloined at McCabe’s” guitar pick. ![]()
McCabes is a great place, though yes, its main focus is guitars. I bought my first whistle there, along with Geraldine Cotter’s tutorial.
I wish there was a store here in Florida like McCabe’s.
Rosie, there’s a place in the
French Quarter that sells
generations. I’m afraid that’s
it for New Orleans.
Thanks for the McCabes tip, gang!
Jim, Here’s another SoCal shop that sells whistles. http://www.shadetreeguitars.com/
Call them for types and prices.
Good luck,
Gary
PS - DazedinLA was going to put up a list of known whistle dealers, nation wide on the Whistle Matrix. Does anyone know if he did it?
Just wanted to say that I did visit
McCabes, tonight in fact. It’s a neat
place, especially stringed instrument
wise. Nice people work there, too.
They actually had two chieftain
low Ds and one chieftain high D. The devil
made me buy one of the low Ds.
Thanks again!
When I was last in McCabes, about 3 years ago, they had a basket-full-O-cheiftains.
Is that gone now, or were the whistles you mention just among them? ![]()
There were two left, now one…
