I’ll be in the Chicago area next week and I wonder if there are any good places to shop for whistles. I’ll be staying near O Hare and then spending the day downtown. Thanks.
On Michigan Avenue, the Miracle Mile, whatever, right next to Symphony Hall, there’s an instrument shop out of another century. Older, reserved gentlemen behind the counters. I wish I could remember the kinds of whistles they sold, but it was before I started paying attention! I tried a solid brass one, I think. Small but interesting selection.
I hope people from Chicago have some suggestions-- I’d love to know of other whistle places in that great city.
… I just remembered a good source, the Old Town School of Folk Music. Here’s the web address: http://www.oldtownschool.org/ I’ll bet they can give you some shops to look for.

The Irish American Service Center on the South Side is also a good resource…half of Chicgao is Irish, this is the city that dyes it’s river green on St. Paddy’s Day fa cryin’ outloud!
Anna, try the Old Town School of Folk Music’s Different Strummer Music Shop at 4544 North Lincoln Avenue. They usually have a variety of low-end whistles around (Waltons, Generations, Clarkes, Susatos) and the occasional up-market Schultz weasel.
Paddy’s On the Square in Long Grove, Il, has a great variety of difficult to find CDs. I know of no other store outside of the Claddagh Records Store on Dame Street in Dublin, the Living Tradition in Cork, or Custy’s in Ennis that has as many or more hard to find trad CDs. You’ll need to rent a car to get out there, though.
Haven’t been near then since they were on Armitage…and that was when John Carbo had it!
