i am going to be in LA for a week starting thursday. Can anyone recommend some music shops that sell whistles, and some pubs that have worthwhile sessions that could check out?

Hi, as far as music shops go, you might start with McCabes Music Store on Pico Blvd. in Santa Monica, they are the only shop I know of around the LA area with a pretty wide variety of traditional instruments. Letsee, for sessions, the Celtic Arts Center runs a really friendly open session on Monday nights at 9pm, for directions and such try www.celticartscenter.com Hope you enjoy your stay!

Well, there’s a pub gig, not really an open session with some great musicians on Sundays at the Finn McCools Pub in Santa Monica on Main Street. Terrific music for a listen and they’ve got guinness. =)

Yeah, I was just at Finn McCools this past Sunday, a pretty large session with 2 or 3 bodhran players, an Irish flute (Nick has an amazing olwell), banjo, concertina, 2 guitar players, 2 fiddle players, mandolin player, Nick plays the whistle as well, but he was only playing his flute last week, if you know the tunes, jump in. There is one on Thursday nights at the Mulligan in Van Nuys, I don’t remember the time. But if you are going to be here over the weekend there is an Irish festival at the Pomona Valley Fairplex on Saturday and Sunday that I am planning on going to on Saturday and potentially Sunday.

The cost is $12, $8 for students and seniors. But I’m sure you’ll find a selection of whistles, whistlesmiths and it has a lot of music. Knock (pun intended) yourself out.
