What's this white top everyoe's talking about?

Ok I know Ive been going insane for quite sometime now, but I can’t seem to find any information on where to get white tops for Generation, or (fill in the blank: metal whistles with plastic head).

I know I read something about white tops somewhere on this board, but where?!

Are they available for dickering around with or are they a private supply that are used for someone’s unique tweak?

Hoover Whitecaps are a whistle head made by whistle smith Mack Hoover, a frequent contributor to this board. The ones you mostly hear of are high Ds, though there are others available. You’ll see a lot of testimonials here about how a Whitecap saved a bad wistle from the junk man. At $20, they cost more than a cheap whistle, but are really cheap for a handmade and hand tuned whistle.

Here’s the link to Mack’s website:

Mack Hoover was so very kind to give me a white cap (through a reliable and capable intermediary). It’s is a wonderful little whistle head. Great tone, nice control. As for playing characteristics, it is a bit on the sensitive side, meaning that it wants more of a steady, even air stream. I like huffing and puffing into my whistles, so I tend to be drawn toward whistles that handle surges of breath well, like Generations, Overtons, Clarks. The Whitecap isn’t quite that whistle, but it’s hard to beat for sound and I love switching it around on my whistles (it does very well on the Generation Eb body). Great stuff.

How about the new Huffer Whitecap?

Bloomy gets first refusal.

I haven’t found Generations to be all that “huffable” myself.

My favorite whistles when I want to “lean into” the tune a bit (in no certain order): Cronnolly, Syn, Susato, Mello-D, Sweet, some Clark originals.

Most of the Generations I’ve played will squeak or get raspy when blown with force.

Careful how you use the term Huffer as it can have a much different conotations :open_mouth:

NOT FOR THE TIMID OR FEINT HEARTED!!

Yes! yes! Great idea, Mack. We could call it the Bloocap.

That’s what I tweak them for, and I actually like a certain kind of squawk, like hissing high blip… you hear some of the older players do it. Different from loss-of-control-kinda squawks and hard to describe. The Clarks of course are great for the breathy push, but in this department NOTHING that I’ve ever played beats an Overton. Yummy.

I know what you’re talking about, now. Sorry, my bad.

I was thinking more along the lines of breath pulses similar to what is sometimes done by flute players.

I agree the little “blip” effect is cool, and I’ve been working on doing this on flute, by cutting from the 2nd octave.

peeplj and bloomfield I’d like you to listen to what Kevin Henry did with a CPVC A that I thought was a failed Hoover. He went through a whole bunch before he found the one he liked best of all.

Too huffy for a hoover; just huffy enough for a henry

I like “bloocap”!
Anyone have a suggestion for the color?

Oh well played!!! Thanks for sharing that!!!

That’s some lovely fine whistle playing, and a fine sounding whistle as well.

Kevin Henry is great. Love that style. Thanks, Mack.
