What tune are you obsessive about playing these days?

For me, it’s Cathal McConnell’s:

Ya’ll were right about those Feadog whistles, by the way: they tweak up nice.

uuuummmhhh…wow!!!

Nicely done! That was one of the first tunes I worked on when I began whistle lessons a year or so ago–didn’t sound anything like yours!

These days I can’t seem to get enough of that Junior Crehan tune that Steve J transcribed from Micho Russell for the ITM forum–it goes by different names but there it’s called Her Golden Hair Flowing Down Her Back. I’m learning it on the flute and am not ready to post a clip, but I could play it over and over and over again and then want to play it some more.

Carol

Geez!

Swallowtail Jig. Actually, I’m just into double jigs these days…there are a couple I’ve been working a lot, but Swallowtail seems to be just what my fingers want to do whenever I pick up a whistle.

Redwolf

Devils of Dublin, Martin Wynne’s #1, The Dawn/Michael Reilly’s, and a G major single reel I don’t have a name for yet.

Yowza James!! :stuck_out_tongue: I’ve been attempting to play Crested Hens well, and trying to get the rhythm of Cliffs of Moher. I can’t seem to get it quite right though, and it’s bugging the snot out of me! LOL

About everything on the Lunasa cd’s.
Can’t get Dick Gossip’s out of my head eighter.(Glad to it of course)

The Threee (that’s how its spelled on the sheet) Sea Captains, a set dance tune. Its almost driving me bonkers since part B has two parts - seems like it should be Part A, Part B and Part C. Part B has 20 bars unlike the normal 16. BUT I love it! Popular in Ireland in the 19th Cent. the dance represents a sea battle of two ships coming together, passing, then firing cannons (foot stomping and hand clapping).

Whistle on! BillG

Oh - James!@ I got so carried away with the sea battle I forgot to tell you how great your MP3 was - almost lost my breath listening. I’m nowhere near ready for that speed - guess that’s why I’m still in love with slow aires.

Played in public “accidentally” (long story) for the first time on Friday night with a group and was left in the dust as far as how many tunes everybody knew. Feeling somewhat overwhelmed right now with just needing to catch up with the basic session tunes. Also working on Lunasa’s “The Last Pint” and a pretty thing I heard Friday night, “Seamus O’Brien.”

I’m actually just over being obsessed with “The Battering Ram,” a lovely three part jig I had learned poorly about a year ago and found delightful (and easy) when I revisited it a few weeks ago.

I’m also enjoying “My Darling Asleep”, which I picked up fairly easily – probably because it’s a simple tune – but which has a lot of nice bounce to me. Played it in the session Saturday for the first time and was pleased to be able to keep up and do a fairly credible job.

The Tempest Reel

The Blarney Pilgrim.

Oddly enough, this week it’s two marches from Tom McHaile’s whistle CD (Hyne’s and the Centenary). They sound really nice on my F whistle.

“The Job of Journeywork” by Martin Fay off the ‘Best of the Chieftains’ CD. In the process of writing out the tablature. Really fun to play.

“The Rakes of Mallow” because I watch “The Quiet Man” every St. Patricks’ Day (it’s on TNT every year here) and the tune is so damned catchy!!!

The Banshee reel. Don’t know why, but I can’t stop playing it.

A whistle/flute playing friend and I got together yesterday for some tunes. We did a bunch of Irish tunes and then I suggested we try this old-time tune called Shaking Down the Acorns-my current obsession. So we did. Whistle and bouzouki. I thought it sounded great even if I do say so myself.

Steve

ARE YOU ACTUALLY INSINUATING THAT WHISTLE PLAYERS COULD POSSIBLY BE OBSESSIVE???
