Favorite Current Tune

I recently ran across a jig entitled “Merry Christmas” (#841 in O’Neill’s). Its a great little tune.

I was wondering what everyone else’s favorite current tune was?

Thanks,
Don

Blarney Pilgrim and
God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen as well as
Wassail, wassail (ala Mannheim Steamroller)

Otter’s Holt
…let’s add some flavor to our picks…
This tune is very strikingly similar to the melody of the Andy Stewart song titled “Tell Her That You Love Her”)..could it have been his “inspiration” ?
This is also the tune that Joanie Madden played on one of her CDs by blowing across the top of the windway instead of into the fipple end, and she claims to have received complaints from people thinking they had purchased a defective CD.

Mouse in the Mug, and The Carillion.

I’ve been trying to learn how to play “Banish Misfortune” but right now I stink. I’ve heard the song a million times at Jump, Little Children shows (Matt B. always plays it before his, uh, “special” version of Lannigan’s ball), but on the sheet music I was using, there’s this one part that doesn’t “sound right” to me and I always seem to “trip” over it…

Amhran a Leabhair, or however you spell it.

TelegramSam,
keep at Banish Misfortune, don’t give up! This was the first tune I ever learned and at first I thought it was the most scarriest thing I have ever heard but now I can play it really well, so don’t give up! My favorite tunes right now would have to be Trip to Pakastan, The Ale is Dear, and Malts on the Opitics.

Caryn

Well I can almost play the first 8 bars, and sorta the 2nd 8, it’s just this one little part that messes me up. I don’t know why, though. I do plan on learning it eventually, however, as I am as stubborn as a mule, and I’m not about to let a paltry few notes mess me up!

MOUSE IN THE MUG! I’ve got to hear this tune.
Where did you find it, jomac?

Lately I’m partial to the “South Wind.”

Ashokan Farewell has been a fav for me lately - that and an arrangement of Good Christian Men Rejoice that I’m adapting from an organ arrangement…

Cal

One of my current favorites is Aisling Gheal. The version I’m working on is from JC’s Tuneweb, but it’s somewhat different from that which Mary Bergin plays on Feadoga Stain II. Does anyone know if sheet music exists which is similar to what she plays? If not I’ll just have to drive wife, kid, and dogs, barking mad while I pick it off her CD.

At the moment I’m learning a bunch of tunes from The lonesome touch by Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill. This is the most Whistle friendly non whistle CD I have ever heard and is great to play along to and its also good ear training.Peace,Mike:)

5 mile chase, this tune sounds GREAT on the whistle or flute!

I’m into all the modal sounding tunes at the moment - Walls of Liscarrol, Hag at the churn, Gander at the pratie hole and a jig off an old Stockton’s wing record, as well a few nice reels - one from Liam O’Flynne and anything by Planxty.

Jomac -I learned the tune Mouse in the Mug a couple of weeks ago, great tune. I had never heard of it before then. Some friends and I do a group whistle lesson here in L.A., and that tune is awfully popular now! lol

Hey! Did someone say Planxty?? If you don’t have Cold Blow and the Rainy Night, get it. It’s got a ton of great whistle-friendly tunes. Get a Bflat whistle to play along with “P Stands for Paddy.”
My clip of Frost is all Over/Gander in the Pratie Hole I learned from that cd. (Jigs on Clips and Snips)
Edit: Forgot to mention current favorite: 3 “Kerry Slides” from Chieftains5. I’ll post those soon.

I can’t stop playing Boys of the Town, a nice little jig. Turlach Boylan starts off his CD “The Tidy Cottage” with this tune.

Being a rank beginner, single Mom, and employed full time, I choose something nice, simple, slow, and relaxing…Crested Hens, by way of Solas mutilation, as well as a local band, Sigean…Such a beautiful melody!

If I ever manage to finish the low D I’m trying to make, I’ll be even happier playing this one. I just love those low tones!

I’m playing whistle for our Christmas Revelry at church in a few weeks so I’m concentrating on that stuff right now, a little of everything,- Personet Hodie, Gower Wassail, Lord of the Dance, Christ Child Lullaby(Low D for this one) etc. About 20 tunes in all.
As for other whistle tunes- I’m trying to get Give Me Your Hand on Low D(my new toy that I really love!
