what key is matt malloy playing in on...

shadows in stone, the first cut? as near as i can tell, it is in the key of B. i am able to “play along” learn it with a b whistle, and then transpose on a d flute. but how does he do it? is it done on a d flute or c flute?
so i guess i know what key it is in. i really want to know on what instrument he is playing it.

Bb flute.

Yeah, I think he’s playing an old cocuswood Hawkes Bb flute with Siccama keys.

Just to clarify: It’s a bit sharp of Bb; I think you’re right that this is his Hawkes, but I also think I remember hearing him say that this old “Bb” flute of his actually plays in what today we would call B. I guess that makes sense since most of the old D flutes also play sharp of A=440.

Thank you.
my point exactly.
i am able to play along with it perfectly in pitch with a b instrument, so the original answer of Bflat did not make sense. now it does.
