What about a Hernon flute?

Has anyone heard things about, or played a Marcus Hernon flute? As a starting fluter, I don’t really know him, but he seems to be a well known flute player, right? Does anyone have some comments on the flutes he makes?

That’s where the ‘search’ function of these boards comes in so handy

There was thread recently about the very man - ojvoj’s review was very favorable. I emailed Marcus myself - great guy! Won’t have any pictures of his work for a little while though

There’s TONS of stuff on many other makers as well, just give the archives a work-out

Thanks for your reply!

I actually did search and find that threat already, but it was the only one I could find. He probably isn’t well known as a flute maker.

As you suggested I will take a look at the other makers as well, although I really did that a while ago. Went to every flute makers website listed on firescribble and searched the board for interesting ones. Still I got interested in Hernon as the price he askes for a flute is rather low and that’s why I wanted to see how his flutes are rated.

Any other interesting suggestions for flutes of about 500 euro maybe? I’m only looking for a keyless flute actually.

Hammy Hamilton and/or Eamonn Cotter.

No prob Hoed  Glad you had already found the info

I think not much has been said about Hernon’s flutes because he’s only recently begun making them. Could be he’s the next Grinter, or Wilkes and snatching one up now would be a great investment!

Hammy’s are running around $800 US last I checked, but his pedigree is impeccable, and Cotter’s is very good too. Hear about Murray’s in high regard also, but I haven’t found much price-wise on his flutes.

From what I heard from Eamonn early this year, his keyless blackwood flutes now cost about 700 Euro. I got my Murray last year for about 400 pounds I think, though his prices may have been converted to Euros now that he has moved to Galway.

It seems to be a kind of catch 22 to start making flutes;
People are unsure to buy from a new maker because there is no rating of the flutes. If nobody buys the flutes there can´t be a rating.
I´m going to visit Marcus i November and take some pictures of he´s flutes and workshop. I´m going to share the pictures with you.

Great! Really looking forward to that.

I already sent him an e-mail for information about the flutes. Still waiting for an answer though, so can’t give anymore information. I just sent him the e-mail today, so it’s no wonder I haven’t received a reply yet by the way.

Yes, please share the info you get. It’s always good to support a new maker.

Hamilton, BTW, is 700 Euro.
M&E (http://www.irishflutes.net) is US$495 for a wooden flute, US$325 for PVC.

Haven’t seen one my self yet, but heard nothing but raving reviews from people who tried one. Buy a flute from a maker who also is an excellent flute player and you can’t go wrong. I’m sure Marcus wouldn’t sell a flute he wasn’t happy with himself.
Havn’t planned to buy a new flute right now, but I still consider buying one from Marcus as I suspect that prices won’t stay this low for long.

Hey Par!
I Just shipped my chanter off to Allan today. He seems to be a really nice man.
Thanks a lot for the tip.

Cheers!

Hey Par!
It’s soon mid November and I keep an eye on your website regularly, hoping to find some nice pics of Marcus’s flutes.
I also have a request for some detailed close up photos and audio samples.
And what about a video clip of you and Marcus doing a duet?
That would be awesome (you don’t need to tap dance naked or anything, just blow into the stick).

Let us know how the trip went and upload a few Tb of pic- and audio-files.

Cheers!

How does a Marcus Hernon keyless compare to a Sam Murray keyless? As regards finish, tone and and bottom notes? Has anyone had a blow on both? Hernon’s price for a keyless seems reasonable 460 euros according to his website.

Hi!
As you can see from Par’s avatar he plays one. And soon we’ll know how it compares to a Hernon.

Hey guys, check Par’s review of his experiences with a Hernon vs. his Murray in the link to the first thread

Seems that a Hernon’s a good player and holds it own (better?) against his Murray in his opinion.

P.S. Looking forward to more pictures as well!

Thanks Ryan!
Dont see how, but I obviosly missed that post by Par.
