Wanted: Tunable Low D side by side case/bag

I’ve got a new Tuneable Goldie Overton Low D on the way  and it just occurred to me that I’d like to have a compact storage/travel bag that allows me to store the whistle in two pieces, side by side (separate sleeves) so that it will travel in my backpack more compactly. I thinnk what I’d like is something like the bag that comes with Abell whistles, although I’m open to other suggestions, if folks have seen something along similar out there in the market.

I know I can custom order a case from the person who makes those bags for Chris, but I thought I’d ask around here to see if there’s something I’ve missed that’s already out there.

Suggestions anyone? (Something tells me Colin or Brigitte will have a suggestion and I should have thought to ask them first!

Loren

Loren! How have you been, man? Sounds like you’re doing fine whistle-wise, anyway.

This might be what you were talking about, but have a look at these.

Tom

tja… should have said something … tata!!! the other thing if taking apart a lot, you need PTFE tape accompanying you, as it does not like to be taken apart and squeezed back in many times… and need a good case to protect the tuning slide part, it is not as strong taken apart as the normal tube…

All fine here and hope with you, too… have a good slide into the year!!!
Brigitte

P.S. If possible keep it in one, it might be a higher chance to drop one of the parts at some time if you take/put them out/in and then :sniffle:

Tom! How ya been? Good to “see” ya here. I’ve been taking a (much needed) break from the board for a while, you know how that goes. Been working 14-16 hour days too, which doesn’t leave much time for typing.

Cool website!

Thanks for the link, very nice looking stuff - I haven’t checked out that site in a very long time, so there’s much more variety there now. Might have to consider a special order.

Brigitte,

Warnings well taken, but if I don’t break something, what is Colin going to have to fix?!? Ha ha, just kidding of course

Seriously though, I’ll be careful if I am taking the whistle apart. I was actually thinking of making a hard plastic sleeve that would fit over the slide to protect it when taken apart. I think I’ve seen something like this on a few of the silver tenon flutes, even though that silver is harder than the aluminum. Well, I’ll see if the whistle fits in my pack in one piece when it gets here. Hopefully that will be soon, because I’m really excited about getting this particular whistle!

Thanks again,

Loren

Hey Loren-- what are you doing with yerself these days?
Do you have access to a lathe? You could machine an aluminum or Delrin sleeve to protect the slide of your Overton when it’s unassembled.

Hiya Paul,

Yes, that would be my first choice, but unfortunately I haven’t replaced the lathe and other tools yet. Sometime later this year I should have the funds to rebuild the shop.

In the mean time, I’m working as a Personal Trainer and Kickboxing Instructor at a swanky club here in town - lot’s of doctors, lawyers, CEO’s, actors, pro athletes etc. A whole different world, but I did find my way back into health care, with the skill sets and experience I already had. Seemed more sensible than reinventing the wheel at my age.

Loren

If you manage to get over near Albany, bring the Overton and I’ll machine one for you. That green and yellow Delrin didn’t prove to be too popular :frowning: so I have plenty to make a sleeve for your tuning slide. Or, send me dimensions: I’ll make the ID a tad undersize and you can sand it to fit snugly

Thanks Paul, I appreciate that  I probably won’t get out of town much till spring, but if I get around to digging my calipers out of the moving box they are in, I’ll measure the Low D slide and shoot you the dimensions. Can’t let all that green and yellow Delrin go to waste!

How’s work going?

Loren

Hi Loren. If you don’t find what you are looking for, I will be glad to talk to you about making a custom case for you. If your primary concern is getting it into your pack, then I can see why you want to break it down into the two pieces, but it is also possible to make one for the assembled whistle that can be attached to you pack. That way you can reduce the risk to the tuning slide.

Thanks. Your line has really expanded! Everything looks great - glad to see you doing well with it all.

The whistle will have to go inside my pack the majority of the time because I normally ride my bike to and from work (and where ever else) in all sorts of weather. Interesting thought to strap it to the outside though, which might work well during the summer months…

I hesitate to have something custom made at this point, because I suspect I’m going to change my mind about what I want before too long

Once the whistle shows up and I’ve had time to fiddle with it a bit, I’ll have a better idea of exactly what I’m looking for.

Come delivery dude, hurry up and get here…

Loren

Loren, you’re still a bum. You know that. Is that you in that photo? Has a Hannibal Lector sort of feel. Can I use it when you’re done with it?

I can’t believe you didn’t start nursing school after all that discussion awhile back. You could have been done by now and earning an honest living. Right.

So, when are you going to post a tune on-line?? So anyway, should I get a Generation or an O’Riordan?
Tony

Tony,

Yup, once a bum, always a bum. I’m an escaped convict/cannibal type bum though, so you might want to be careful…

Funny thing happened on the way to nursing school: I found out people are willing to pay good money for the skills I already have, so I figued I’d skip the whole getting way in debt and going back to work for the man thing.

I haven’t posted a sound clip in the nearly 100 years C&F has existed, why would I ruin my perfect record by doing so now?

Buy an aluminum O’Riordan, a box of steel wool, and a blue top nickel generation: Use the steel wool to strip all the paint or anodized junk off the O’Riordan, replace the headjoint with the generation plastic top and, if you’re lucky, the the local session players won’t notice you’re playing some stinkin’ fancy pants whistle, thus saving you the grief and embarrassment of not being “Trad” enough.

Right then, I think my work here is done.

Loren
