Wal-Mart whistle stand...

Sorry if this has been posted before.
I just found a nifty “whistle holder” at Wal-Mart. Actually, it’s sold as a thread holder, and can be found in the sewing department. This $9-ish item is a square wooden frame with 2 folding legs that allow it to stand on a table at a slant. It has 60 short 1/8" dowels designed to hold spools of thread, but which hold smaller whistles nicely. I plan to use mine to hold parts of wooden whistles that are in various stages manufacture but this would make a nice way to display your WHOA acquisitions. For larger whistles, you could easily drill out some of the dowels on a lower row and replace them with thicker, longer ones. Check it out

Caveat to my above posting-- I have NOT tried fully loading this stand with whistles (haven’t made that many yet!), and it might POSSIBLY become front heavy and fall forward. If you see one in the store, let me know what you think.

I have four of these, and they’ve been my main method of storing whistles for a couple of years now. Sometimes you DO have to be a bit careful about how you arrange larger and heavier whistles–it can topple. But, overall, they make a great way of storing whistles.

A good and similar alternative for low whistles are those little wooden racks that are used to hold plates in china shops.

I guess since there are so many custom whistle manufacturers, and so many with an extreme case of WhOA it is time for someone to design custom whistle stands. To bad I’m primarily a painter/sculptor.
I know a wood artist who would make them, but the stands would be cost prohibitive because he is an artist. Heh, heh. . . crossing the threshold from craftsman/hobbyist to artist usually is only in how much one charges for their work.
Anyway, if there are some good metal/plastic/woodworkers out there with an eye for whistle stand design you probably could be having complaining posts on this board about the wait for your product to arrive.
Think of the money you will lose er, ah, I mean make!
Seriously, a design for a display stand done by a person familiar with the symptoms of WhOA, as well as being a whistler his/herself, would make a great accessory product for those who already own an armful of whistles. Even if there are dozens of products out there that whistlers are using, it would be nice to have something that is well thought out, well constructed, aesthetically pleasing, and a good value.

I’m an amateur woodworker, turning and scrolling, but I am currently on an internship away from my tools and during classtime I have no time for playing with wood. However, I fully intend to start designing/making whistle cases and stands when I graduate. Only a 1.5 year wait folks! grin

Check out the stands at David Migoya’s site http://home.earthlink.net/~migoya/id62.htm These are nice stands, but there is probably room for one that holds alot of whistles.

PS How do I post a link that is active. The usual cut and paste method I use everywhere else doesn’t work here.

Nevermind above PS… Looks like it works if I just type it in rather than pasting… strange.

Dale, if they hold up to 60 whistles each and you have four of these things… Does this mean that you have enough whistles to …

I think I get the picture.

I’m just gonna go lay down for a few minutes.
