waiting list and price

Just a quick and probably silly question. When one’s pipes are finally ready, which price is it - the price at the time the order was placed, or current price? The price of some makers sets seem to be going up quite a bit year to year.

It seems that for a maker to have you paying current price(s) if they have indeed changed, without your prior knowledge, that would amount to some sort of wrong doing..

moreover, for someone to not know in advance those details, would probably not be…so good.

I reckon it depends on the maker, wait time, and deposit policy.

If a 50% deposit is taken on order then it seems appropriate to honor the original quoted price, unless the order changes midway through. (That’s what I do, anyway).

If there’s only a token deposit, or if the wait is many years, that may not be practical. Who knows what economic conditions might be like in, say, 8 or 10 years?

Thanks. So I guess there is no standard practice then.

Sorry, but I can’t help but think that a dose of caveat emptor is required here. Did you not agree on a final price with the maker at the outset? If you did, even if it was only verbal, you have a contract with the maker for a set price. If the maker dithered all over the place at the beginning and never set a firm price, or if you were constantly changing your order without resetting the firm price, you are probably at the pipemaker’s whim and mercy.

My question was not meant to address a problem. Maker has a posted price list and all that which I have no doubt will be honored. Just curious if there was a norm, as it does seem risky (mostly to maker) when long waits of many years are taken into account.

I think you’re talking about two different scenarios–usually, you place an order and agree on a price. Some pipemakers with long lists may do something along the lines of “your place in line is coming up in x number of years; I’ll contact you x number of months ahead of time to discuss final order and price” which makes sense if you’re looking at waits of 5+ years.

I don’t think there are any reputable pipemakers saying “forget the price we agreed on, this is the price now.”

Thanks, I was wondering how they handled it.

… none that wish to continue making and selling their pipes, I’ll warrant.
