volume/puff ratio

I was just given a low D as a gift and am thinking about making some changes to it, but I wanted to get some advice before I start experimenting.

The whistle was made by a local Harp maker who is branching out into the world of whistles and flutes. It’s quite nice looking - brass, and somewhat reminicent of a Chieftain Gold in appearence (though only in appearence). It is in tune, but it’s amazingly quiet, and fragile sounding. It takes a fair amount of puff as well.

What I’m wondering is whether there is any way to increase the volume of a whistle without increasing its breath requirements? Suggestions of any kind are welcome.

Unfortunately, I don’t have access to a camera at the moment, but the fipple seems to have been fashioned after a Chieftain, if that helps.

Thanks.

There would be a couple of benefits to talking directly to the local maker.

Firstly, they might gladly tweak it for you or let you trade for a whistle that meets your requirements. This seems to be the way that many craftsmen operate.

Secondly, if they wreck it, you’re not out a whistle. Nobody warranties home-grown tweaks.

Best of luck!
