I have today made my own Low D Whistle from 22mm copper tubing, and its all in tune, however I am looking for hints and tips to increase the volume, especially the lower notes. I think I may need to tinker with the air window and the fipple.
Are their any tips out there from fellow whistle makers?
Once this is done I can coat the whistle to get rid of that coppery smell on the fingers!
Beware, making your own whistles is more addictive than drugs…
If you want to increase the volume of the lower notes you should increase the length of the window. However, doing so will increase the volume of the first octave at the expence of the second so there is a fine balance between getting it just right and too much.
Hi Feaddoggie,
I will post some pictures with other details, so you can get a better idea.
Problem is, being copper the flash bounces off. Never mind I will sort that out a.s.a.p.
Sure I read somewhere about adjusting volume but cannot remember where from, never mind it will come to me.
You can solidify the lowest notes by beveling the edge of the fipple plug a BIT more. Take off a tiny amount with a file or sandpaper, test, repeat as needed.
Point taken, making your own is very very addictive, but very satisfying when you stumble on something that actually works! lol.
By the way,
A BIG thank you to everyone who has responded and helped me with this,
I really appreciate the help & support, and already planning my next whistle.
