Visiting SF/Monterey area this weekend

Hi left coasters. I will be in the SF/Monterey area tomorrow through next Tues. Can anyone recommend:

Good Pubs

Good music shoppes (with whistles, of course)

Good Pubs

Sessions, etc.

Good Pubs???

LEE

p.s. - Did I mention GOOD PUBS???

Well for starters, there is only one store that sells whistles and its Lark in the Morning. Go online for directions.

Others have been to An Bodhran for session on Sunday, I think. I haven’t been but hear its good.

this should get you started: http://www.sfcelticmusic.com/

as for shops, well, the main one in the SF bay area is lark in the morning, near Fisherman’s Wharf. It gets mixed opinions, but it’s where you’ll find the most whistles in one place: http://larkinthemorning.com/

IMHO, the session at An Bodhran (http://www.anbodhran.com/) on Sunday night is the best in the west, probably the most authentic playing and environs you’re likely to find around. Top-notch players and plenty o Irish clientele.

The Plough and Stars in the Richmond District is renowned for Irish music, and worth a stopover for a pint. The Gasmen, local favorites are playing there Saturday night.

Ireland’s 32 is also worth stopping by for the history of Irish San Francisco alone (http://www.sfstation.com/bars/irelands32/)

slightly OT but worth mentioning is the annual KFOG Kaboom, free concert, fireworks, etc on Saturday. see: http://www.kfog.com/Events/kaboom/2004/default.asp

if you haven’t been to San Francisco before, well there’s plenty of other sites and sounds to indulge in…

enjoy your stay in our fine town ~

yeah, what Stiofan said, plus: Don’t forget your wedding dress! nyuk.

Don’t forget your wedding dress! nyuk.

Thanks for the invite, but I’m very HHH (happily-hetero-hitched) :stuck_out_tongue:

And thanks for the info (especially the part about GOOD PUBS! ) . I’m really looking forward to the trip!

Ya see, Leel, it just DOESN’T Matter. I mean, bring your cat and get hitched. Remember, some of us call the Mayor Gavin Newsom;

“Any-twosome Newsom”

PS. Though I don’t live there, I claim rights to snipe because my 9th GGrandfather founded SF in 1776. If you like history, you might want to visit Mission Dolores. Great Grandpa is buried at the altar of the old chapel. He was married to a woman, fwiw. The churchyard cemetery is very peaceful though the surrounding neighborhood is not.

LOL

That’s a pretty big area! Monterey is almost 80 miles from San Francisco!

If you should find yourself in Santa Cruz (between Monterey and San Francisco), you can find some whistles (Susatos, Clarkes and Generations) at Thomas Music and some (notably Chieftain low whistles) at Sylvan Music. We’re a bit short on pubs…Rosie McCann’s, downtown, calls itself an Irish pub based on the fact that it sells Guinness, but the music is pure jazz. There’s also the Poet and Patriot downtown, which has an open mike night, but no sessions that I know of.

It’s been long enough since I’ve lived in Monterey that I’m not sure what may be there anymore.

Redwolf

DAMN! How did you know about that!!???

And…

Thanks Redwolf. We’ll (the cat and I) will be driving down from SanF to Monterey on Sunday and spending two days there, but I’ll stop and look, and have a pint, in Santa Cruz on the way

BTW - nothin’ wrong with pure jazz, either :sunglasses:
