I totally agree: all beginner pipers should start with a Penny Chanter. If had known this when I started, it’d saved a lot of money for me.
I second this. I had bought this second-hand Penny Chanter (& reed) recently: No problems and the sound is second to none.

I just had the opportunity to hear and play a chanter by Pat Sky and I have to say his Pipes are probally the best kept secret. Tone and quality is top notch.
I just ordered a chanter with a C nat key and wooden head it will be ready in a few months…I can’t wait
