brand spanking new

hello all,
i have been a piper for about 8 years and have been drawn in by the uilleann pipes. i have looked about and found david daye’s site and contacted him about his starter set, waiting for a reply. from what i have read this is a good path to go. what would be the next step? i have seen some people say play the tin whistle while you wait, for the fingering. hopefully i will find an instructor close by. cant wait

Learning the whistle is a good idea. Not because of the fingering (which is different to that of the Uilleann pipes chanter) but to get you learning some tunes and ornamentation.

The method of learning the uilleann pipes is different to the GHB method. If you know an uilleann piper, get him/her give you a few lessons. If not, get a good tutor. In my opinion, the best is The New Approach to Uilleann Piping by Heather Clarke. It’s a book that comes with a CD. Na Piobairi Uilleann (NPU) also offers a series of videos/DVDs called the Art of Uilleann Piping which give good instruction.

You should consider starting to learn to make reeds. Sooner or later you will need that skill, and will have loads of grief without it. David has lots of good tutorial information on his website. The NPU ‘Heart of the Instrument’ DVD is well worth obtaining as well. Any workshops you can take on the subject would be valuable.

just ordered a practice set from patrick sky. rosewood chanter. its the budget set. if i come along good on these i will move up. cant wait!!!
