The Irish Arts Center is proud to present a Master Class and Performance in Uilleann Pipes and Concertina, featuring Ivan Goff (pipes) and Míchéal Ó Raghallaigh (concertina) on Sunday, June 8, 2008.
This special program will feature Uilleann pipes and concertina master classes for beginning and intermediate levels followed by a not-to-be-missed concert by both renowned musicians. Master classes are designed to showcase great Irish musicianship while expanding and building on the Irish Arts Center’s educational and cultural mission.
Master classes and concert will take place at the Irish Arts Center at 553 West 51st Street.
Students will spend time with each instructor for either the pipes or concertina, or both, in groups suited to their skill level. Skill level and instrument preference will be asked for at registration.
Dubliner Ivan Goff (Uilleann pipes, Irish wooden concert flute, Irish whistle) has performed in several well-known productions including extended engagements with Riverdance (US tour and Broadway) and Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance. A former member of Eileen Ivers & Immigrant Soul, Ivan has performed with numerous bands and artists including world-renowned Paul Winter and internationally acclaimed Irish traditional bands Dervish, Lúnasa,and Téada. Ivan’s music is featured in work as diverse as acclaimed art-film Cremaster 3 (dir. Matthew Barney) exhibited in the Guggenheim museum (2003) and in theatrical productions such as Peter and Wendy (Mabou Mines, Dir. Lee Breuer) and The Voice of the Sea (Dir. Mac Uibh Aille). Recent performances include a number of engagements as soloist with the Albany Symphony Orchestra (2007). Now based in New York, Ivan currently pursues a PhD in music at New York University.
Míchéal Ó Raghallaigh (pronounced O’Reilly) is recognized as one of the top exponents of concertina playing in the Irish Traditional music world. From Co Meath, he comes from a musical family and has played from an early age. His rhythmic, punchy style is unique among his peers, and is heard to best effect on his two solo albums Inside Out (2007) and The Nervous Man (2000), 2nd in Earle Hitchner’s ‘Top Ten’ albums of that year. He is a member of the well-known group Providence with whom he has recorded three albums. Míchéal was a member of two ‘Three-in-a-row’ All-Ireland winning Céilí Bands, namely The Táin, who produced an album in 1999, and Naomh Padraig Céilí Bands. He has taught concertina from a young age all over Ireland, North America, and Europe and is in constant demand for master classes and workshops throughout the world. Míchéal has performed with countless greats of the traditional music world. He has participated in many festivals worldwide including, in recent years, the Catskills Irish Arts Week (NY), L’Orient Interceltic Festival (Brittany), and the Tulla Traditional Festival (Co Clare).
