I’ve just came across the website for Tully whistles and they look and sound amazing.Does anyone on here have any experience of them?
The only tnig is,it say’s on his site that he is now taking orders for april 2006 That would be one hell of a wait!!!
I have a Tully. I think you’ll like it if you like some of the traditional sounding whistles. It’s low to moderate volume with some chiff. A beautiful looking tuneable whistle that flares out a bit at the end like a Harper. I find that it’s not as focused in tone as some of my favorite players. It’s quite a deal though all in all for a sterling silver tuneable whistle. Mine has a black delrin fipple.
Philo have you ever wrote a review on one or have you seen one before. I always loved the look of the tullys, but I have never heard a thing about them.
Duffy - I don’t think I ever reviewed it and can’t recall seeing a review. I sort of retired from doing those overblown reviews (by popular demand ). Some whistles suck and you can say that in a word; some are fantabulous, another word; and the rest are somewhere in between and everyone 's got different tastes and opinions. If someone asks, maybe just a responsive comment or two to try to help.
Depends on how strongly others hold opinions, I think, and individual tastes - I know that we’ve disagreed about specific whistles in the past, but if I got a clear “this whistle sucks and this is why” from you on a new whistle I’d probably stear well clear.
The thing is, there ARE a lot of whistles out there that I think suck. I’d guess that about half of them are my individual taste - I don’t much care for Walton’s (except the Mellow D and C), and though I like how well they play (responsive and well in tune) I don’t much care for the sound of my Feadogs. Someone else might like them quite a bit, for precisely the reasons I don’t. There are probably an equally large number that anyone would agree suck pretty badly - the old Coopermans, many Megs (especially the Meg C), bad Generations, etc.
So even from someone as knowledgeable and experienced as you, Jessie - and that’s meant as honest praise, not sarcasm; I’ll be extremely pleased if in a few more years I reach your ability level on whistle and flute - it helps to have more than a simple “it sucks”.
But 10 or 20 words may be all that a given whistle needs. “I don’t like it - it is very breathy, the octaves are unbalanced, and it takes far too much wind” strikes me as a very usable mini-review, and about all that many whistles deserve.
I’ll remember that. I’m likely to be one of them, when I’ve the money free (trying to rein in my purchases - daughter #1 starts college next year).
But you’re really willing to back up your words, too - I’ve been following the other thread about your whistle project. Talk about putting it all on the line - the prase “intestinal fortitude” comes to mind.
