Tsunami Warning Update, Queensland still intact

Hi Everyone

If you happened to hear of a rumour about a ‘tsunami’ warning for the Queensland coast, this warning has been canceled. Yes there was such a warning in the morning and Mackay did feel a small tremmor about 7:00am (I nearly lost my morning coffee, but caught it before it fell off the table). There was a time when mild panick set in and the towns of 1770, Cooktown, Cairns and Townsville where evacuated. The Australian stockmarket nearlly collapsed and the dollar almost went down the tube. But it regained composure after the warning was cancelled at midday today.

We did get a wave but it was only small and nothing that would cause considerable damage. Hay it was pritty cool watching the Pioneer River empty and then rise about two meters (from a high vantage point some considerable distance away). We are yet to find out how much damage has been done to the Solomon Islands, most of their communications are out of order and basic systems such as water-treatment services are non-existent.

We owe the Solomon Islands a great deal as it was our neighbour who warned us of the potential danger, and encouraged our Premier rather firmly to evacuate most of the state. Please keep this pacific nation in your prayers. If the tsunami was much bigger our neighbour would probably have saved thousands of lives.

Good luck, safety and a swift recovery to all in the SIs, OZ, NZ and the south pacific areas. Having been through a few wild hurricane seasons myself (2005 was a nut cracker), I can honestly say I feel your pain.

I’m glad the tsunami was not a terrible disaster and that the people in your area are fine. What a relief. I can imagine they must have been quite frightened even though they had some warning. I would be totally freaked by a tsunami warning :astonished: . I had not heard about that earthquake in the Solomon Islands—I will go read about it and I will be hoping that the damage has not been devastating and that there hasn’t been loss of life. That was very wonderful that they warned your country and cared about the people there.

Japan’s system is pretty advanced.

They show warnings on the TV very soon after a quake.

Most turn out to be false alarms.

But even if they often turn out to be false, I hope people head for the hills. They do don’t they?

The hills are a bad place to be if there has been an earthquake.

Landslides are more common than tsunamis.
