Thoughts on Dixon Hi D "Duo"...

I am primarily curious about the piccolo head. Does is still sound like a whistle, just played like a piccolo/flute?

I would appreciate any further info. Ease of playability, tone, etc.

Thanks

Hi Jack

I have the option of ‘drinking my profits’ (to use a phrase from the bar/pub trade) and taking home a few different whistles to practice on. I’m currently practicing whistle, flute and Low whistle all on Dixons. Even the inexpensive fixed high D, to my ear has a very clean, round, mellow, in-tune sound. The Low D sound is not really comparable to some more expensive hand made ones that I know of, like the O’Briain, but it is still a lovely mellow sounding instrument.

I do have a few problems with water clogging in the windway on the fixed high D, but that may be specific to the actual one that I’m using - I wonder if anyone else has that problem?

The piccolo head sounds like a high-pitched flute to me, rather than a whistle, and not dissimilar to metal piccolo’s that I’ve heard. The sound is more breathy and not the same as a whistle played sideways. But you’d have to hear it yourself to be convinced of that.

All the best,

Steve Power
