here is my latest Ebay deal of the week…
Not bad for $175! (Gloat, Gloat) ![]()

It is made of Cocuswood, with those nice redish lines going through it. I think it is a Prowse style flute. A real honker! It reminds me of the “Collard and Collard” Nickolson’s Improved that you have, Jack.
Pretty wild Key work on the foot, with the almost Bohem size key cups.
(Hmmm…first reply didn’t take ??)
Nice pics Jon…a great buy…the blocks look quite similar…the keys are similar to a no-name Siccama here…did you find any maker name ???
Edit: The keywork on this foot seems to be identical…(the C and C# keys just seem to be 1cmm “higher” on the Siccama)…the blocks seem to be cut at the same angles as well…I’ll have to get you pics
I’m confused. I thought the collective wisdom is that most of the eBay flutes are middle-eastern imports that aren’t worth the wood they’re made from. Is this new, or could you somehow tell it was worth the gamble? ![]()
Nice picture! It’s much clearer than the one on Ebay, but then again, you must get a lot of practice!!
Does the metal lip plate actually extend down into the blowing edge?
Hi Jack,
No makers mark, the flute seems to be a later model, when they bailed on the pewder keys. Like the Siccama, it might be closer to when Bohem was takeing over with his new fangled contraption…
I haven’t measured the bore yet, to compare it with my other flutes to see what it might be modeled after. The block that I replaced on your Nickolson’s flute is the same on this flute, that and the color of the cocus, reminded me of your Collard and Collard. Most of the old Cocus is darker color.
Well I wouldn’t call it collective wisdom… I just spread that around so I can get all the deals!![]()
You need to know what to look for, or you get a Pakistani or out of tune German flute. Those are a crap shoot… The flute was probably made around 1860’s or a little later. The lute didn’t look like this when I got it yesterday afternoon, it took a little work restoring it. There is the usual cracks in the head and barrel. which require pulling the liners on the head and barrel, re-reaming , regluin, missing ferrels, gunk to clean off, plishing fixing rings, etc. But what would be a better way to spend a friday evening…
The photo was a little fuzzy at ebay, but I know the look. The thing I forgot to mention, the flute came with a little screwdriver with a blackwood handle! There are no screws on the flute?
The Emb. hole has the lip plate going all the way around. I actually like the cut of the Emb hole better like this. Makes a very crisp sound.
It’s a great looking flute, Jon, but don’t those keys get in the way when you’re shooting pool?
Hi Jon C. That is really a nice looking flute. Does it play well? Does it leak? This has inticed me to start looking on ebay for flutes. What is your I.D. on ebay so I won’t bid against you.?
Nelson
P.S. For those who are engineering orentated I just started a new site <www.flutephysics.com> Hopefully, articels on flute physics wil follow.
She is a shipworthy flute now that her seams be all caulked!
Go for the English flute this time Nelson, one way to tell is the wood block mounted keys, you love so much… Another way to tell, it will be stamped “London” ![]()
My handle is Jon_sparky, hopefully everyone will bid against me, as the flutes are piling up here! I Still NEED a Rudall & Rose and maybe a Monzani, and Nickolson’s Improved, and might as well throw in a Pratten… ![]()
Have you got any hits on the flutephysics site yet? Will have to go talk “open hole equations” with you!
This weeks “Buy of the Week” Gloat ! Gloat ! ![]()

seems kinda small, Jack! ![]()
Probably just shrunk in the wash…I’ll iron it out…
Jon_sparky, Jon_sparky, Jon_sparky…
…now I know I have a “real flute” to bid for when Jon_sparky is in the deal
![]()
That was the plan, as I am out of control! ![]()
Well you got me there…
F or Eb, perhaps?
I’m gonna guess
F.
![]()
I’ll bet Eb…but I need the parts for an F…it’s been frustrating… ![]()
