Hi everyone, it has been a while…
Here is my latest eBay flute, I recieved Friday, it is made by J. Pfaff, Philadelphia. i love the keys on his flutes, they are so ergonomic! I had to make a new head joint for it, as the old one wasn’t servicable.
Very cool
So what’s the headjoint made of?
Very nice. I like the keys I can see, but wonder about the Bb key.
Bob
Beautiful cocuswood!
I will take a photo, but it is just kind of a standard looking key, stylish but plain jane…
Hi Jon, nice EBay find. Am really impressed that you got the flute and had a new head on it in two days. To a non maker that seems like quick work!
Thanks, I used to do this all the time, lots of fun getting them playing again…
Thank you, Jon. As you say, vanilla.
I’m struggling with getting Julia Delaney up to speed and wishing for something a little more user friendly. Oh,well, the woodshed isn’t that cold. . . .
Bob
Um, Bob, unless you’re playing it in a different key signature, Julia Delaney has no Bbs - no Bs at all in the A section and just 2 Bnats in the B.http://tunepal.org/tunepal/show_tune.php?tunepalid=78-hnr0.abc-2-Julia~Delaney

Not a particularly good one to link to Jem. It doesn’t seem to have the Bnats in the second part (or Bs of any kind) that you, I and just about everyone else plays. I agree with your basic point though. Of course.
Going far afield from Jon’s lovely restoration. . .there are various ways to play ‘Julia’. The descending ‘bridge’,for want of a better term, in the second part of the version I am trying to swat up does have a Bb. It seems there is no one canonical version. . .unless you count the proverbial ‘the one they play at your session. . .’.
It occurred to me as I hit the ‘send’ button that the other tune I’m working on (and not nearly as far along on) which has difficult Bb’s is Crabs in the Skillet.
Bob
Ooops. No more that one does. But the one I was looking at before posting did have… Link fail, I think.
Bob, Crabs sure has Bbs But not many (none in the B music, only in the A and C sections) and pretty straightforward scalewise ones, no awkward jumps to them and none in a great hurry. Actually a good tune to introduce oneself to them, I reckon. ![]()
