An ellipsis is a proper symbol with a name, a history and a definition and everything. In fact, recently redesigned typefaces (fonts aimed at typographers) have been taking advantage of the tremendous expansion of available character codes that unicode makes possible to create a single-character ellipsis with smaller, closer-together dots. I can’t find one with google, but if you pay attention you’ll start to see them in books. I (of course) abhor them.
