I have only just come across the CD “The Poet and the Piper”, featuring the piping of Liam Óg O’Flynn and the poetry of Seamas Heaney (the Derry poet who got the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1995). CD by Claddagh 2003).
Great poetry of course, but also wonderful slow air piping from O’Flynn. I particularly liked the first track Port na bPúcaí, but all the slow air stuff on it is wonderful - Cronán na Máthar particularly evocative.
Also, if you need a justification for your drinking, listen to Heaney’s translation of An Bonnán Buí (by Cathal Buí Mac Giolla Dhonna) - a poem that I remember learning in gaelic in the dim and distant past.
On the drones and the chanter vol 2, the last track is Port na bPúcaí played by Ronan Brown.
Check it out if you like that air, O’Flynn plays it wonderfully on the poet and the piper but…
Hasn’t they been doing the peotry/pipes thing for a good many years? I seem to recall LOF mentioning in an interview that the CD was only proposed after they had been doing the poetry/pipes show off and on for about 10 years.
This is a nice piece of work. Heaney’s poetry, and especially the readings, is quite good. I think the piping is good, for the most part, but not what I have come to expect from Mr. L. O’Flynn. Some pieces are lovely but others are not as reflective of his experience and prior work product as I’ve seen/heard. It may have something to do with his reed. Still, what a treat. My favorite fusion of music and poetry is the Night Fishing piece on the CD A Fire Aflame.
