A few months back, I had thrown around the idea of making a photographic archive (an internet site) of pictures of Uilleann Pipes from different makers all through the ages. I ran into serious dilemas with copyrights, which I should have thought more about, but didn’t.
Currently, I have been granted permission by a few very generous individuals to use pictures of their sets in this project. However, before I can get this off the ground, I need a lot more to work with. Eventually, I hope to have a site running where you can simply post your pictures on the site itself, but at the current time, I will need to host everything myself.
So…
If you are a piper who would like to contribute pictures of your set, or a maker who would like to share pictures of their prize creations, please feel free to email me pictures, or if you have pictures posted somewhere on the internet that I could include in this project, please let me know.
Hi Lordo, well I’ve been compilating images from the post “Pictures of your pipes” and I separated them by maker, I could send them to you, and the pictures of my pipes are stored at my site.

I’ve done the same thing, as well as gathered lots of other shots from other sites, books, etc. However, just using these without consent of the poster of the pictures is just asking for trouble. I would love to see what you have compiled, but I am hesatant about posting anything up with out the consent of the photagrapher/set owner.
I’ll be happy to help with suggestions, etc. (but won’t have time this weekend)
I think that hosting the collection somewhere more public, where some community resources already exist - for instance the “other forum” - would help get people onboard with the idea. I think Jeff offered to assist before. Having it be one person’s pet project, or hosted by an individual’s private site, could have a chilling effect.
As far as those photos which are already hosted elsewhere, it may make more sense to leave them hosted remotely and embed them on the “collection” site. If they need a home (i.e. if the external hosting source is going to delete them, etc.) then they can be moved to the common storage site, and it may make sense to have an offline archive somewhere.
Ideally this could include photos of historic sets and sets owned by people other than just the Chiffboard gang. In the case of historic instruments, instruments of well-known players, etc., it may be easier and/or more appropriate to use embedding, and leave the images hosted with the owner. (The main downside would be bandwidth charges for the hosting party, so it should probably be up to the contributor as to how they prefer to do it.) [One can get permission to do that (embed) without getting permission to do other kinds of republication or copying]. Makers might also be happy to allow embedding, since such photos constitute a sort of publicity.
Another possibility for the future would be having the contributors of images provide an explicit license for their use, for instance choosing from the variety of Creative Commons licenses available. This would allow such images, if so licensed, to be used by other members of the community without seeking explicit per-use approval. The absence of such explicit licensing on the “pictures of your pipes” images is the reason why those images cannot be reused or re-posted for other purposes.
Interesting, something like a virtual museum, or cultural centre, or visual library.
Maybe C&F could make a declaration at it´s begining saying something like “This is a site that promotes the piping culture and anything you publish here can be used to share cultural information” then you choose to post an image or not. I don´t know if it´s possible, at least not now ´cause pics are already posted.
