Waiting for things to arrive in the post is no fun :cry:

The final installment of my chanters collection are winging their way to me from Surrey (postal strikes permitting) and I am impatiently waiting for them to arrive. :sniffle:

I’m on month 17 waiting for a CJ Dixon practice set with mainstock cup. Hopefully, I’m still around when he gets to the drones I ordered. I can’t wait to get this stuff!

So Davey…which key to enjoy playing the most ??? Which one do you go to first when you strap on your bellows and want to play a tune or two ?

Whether you would call my efforts “playing” is a moot point,(I am the world’s worst piper), but the the chanters I reach for most are, in order of preference.

I have not played the Bayley chanters enough yet to form an opinion, the reeds are a touch on the heavy side for me as yet - they are not yet played in.

How long ago did you order them?

A lad I know in Japan has been waiting for two years after being told his regulators were ready.
He paid in full and still hasn’t received them from Chris Bayley.

Chris is suffering from a long term problem with his eyes which swell up alarminly and then crack and bleed - really nasty. May even be delayed stress as he has had a really rough time with an offspring who fall in with bad company three maybe four year ago and caused a lot of problems. When we last spoke he was doing his best to catch up and get orders out had a further appointments at the hospital to try and find out the cause. The doctors think it workshop related as pipemakers use woods known to cause allergies but he is not so certain as he had just come back from a french festival with it worse then ever.
I suspect others on the forum may have visited him and seen what it is like for themselves and it would be nice if they could chip in a lend some support which would be of far more help.
I wonder just how good an occupation pipemaking is with customers hassling, working with dodgy materials and he is not the only maker have had severe health problems and I can think of several other including one who recently died in very tragic circumstances following depression.
What this thread shows is that he is catching up and his orders are being fulfilled in spite of of his health problems and would no doubt be best left in piece without further things such as the forums to worry about
If anyone is in any doubt as to the status of their order then get in touch directly with Chris.

Hi Mukade

The C chanter was ordered January 2007 and the C# in February 2007 (once I knew that I had enough put by to pay for the chanter). I admit that given his health problems, I was wondering if Chris was going to be able to make them for me, so I didn’t hassle him over them, but they got made eventually and are sitting looking at me as I type saying play me. :laughing: :laughing:

Or E natural.

Joe McKenna used to come here to SoCal every year and do some gigs. One year he was playing in C#, the next year he had jumped up to E flat, then the next year he was playing pipes in E (natural) which he had made.

I’ve also seen little chanters in F.

Which brings to mind: just how many keys have chanters been made in? I’ve seen B flat, but have people made them in low A, A flat, or G?

What about high F#, high G?

Then you could have two pipers playing in G in octaves.

I was with Chris on his last trip to France, and I can confirm tht his eyes are in a horrible state, like something out of a horror film. Whatever the origin of the problem any sort of dust affects them, so he has to work in stages on each set in turn.

Mukade - Your friend’s regulators are sitting on Chris’ bench, looking very nice. The delay is with the mainstock, which is raising a lot of dust in the turning, and it hangs around even after removing face masks. Chris has quite a few sets on order, including some rather complicated ones, and is addressing each one in turn, eyes permitting, so I think patience is the keyword. I have been waiting four years for my Taylor 4 reg set and I am quite happy not to press the issue being aware of the facts.

Let’s refrain from dragging up “delay” issues regarding Chris and other pipemakers please. These issues are best taken up with said pipemakers and not speculated upon within this forum.

I grew up next door to a pipemaker. I know the problems they can have.
I have never had pipes delivered on time, and I have never complained to a maker when it has happened.

Things are in hand now and as Joe said lets leave it at that.

You can blame Chris Bayley for both chanters and photos Joseph.

Had them at the pipers club last night, to let Uilliam and Joe try them out and let me hear them played properly (they sounded nice - especially the C#).
