Suggestions for a Case

So, I’ve got a new (to me) Hammy. Secondhand. The case that came with it is not ideal so I want to get a decent case for it, but nothing too fancy. I tried a camera hard shell case, but the Hammy being a Pratten, it didn’t fit.

I could probably order one from Hammy but I’m wondering what other case solutions people have found for Prattens. I’m thinking more of the go down to the store and get it kind of thing but other ideas would work as well. I know about the rolls and the expensive fancy cases. I just want something that protects the flute well with foam or something. Preferably something with a hard shell.

Thanks

Trying going to a sporting goods store and look at the plastic, egg-crate foam lined pistol cases. Bring a tape measure and the dimensions of your flute.

Chances are you’ll find on that fits for under $20.

I got a pistol case and found that it just barely held my flute. IT does, however, hold several whistles beautifully!

For a flute case, I went to The Whistle Shop. They have a hard case for $65. Looks like the cases use for most Boehm flutes.

Good luck!

David Migoya http://www.fyfer-restorations.com used to sell beautiful custom-fitted wooden cases. You might try asking him if they’re still available. He might be able to direct you to the case maker, if he’s not handling them anymore.

He used to also sell great ugly plastic custom-fitted cases, but i know those are not made anymore.

Did you think about making one?

I couldn’t find what I wanted to hold all my whistles (about 10), Dixon 3 piece and couple of bamboo flutes so I designed and made a kind of bag with a nice strong shoulder strap and that opens out with all the instruments in their own slots, a pocket for books (or to use like a handbag - but maybe you wouldn’t need that! ). I bought material and very thick padding (like is used for duvets) and quilted it. So far it works very well - and if its cold it keeps me warm!!

Nope, I don’t do the plastic cases anymore.
Reuben will still do a custom fitted hardwood case, See the website for info.
The Doskocil case that I use for all my flutes is this one:

At $9 it’s pretty cheap, although the store near me sells them for $5.
They’re great for Rudall-style flutes. And it locks and is quite good at protecting my investment (and babies!).
Pratten style need a different one, which was called a Doskocil Sport case for a handgun. Little bit bigger and on an angle fit the Pratten just fine.

Sarah, might you put up a photo of that? I have flute-bag-itis and have
made a few, still looking for the right design to make. Yours sounds great.
Cheers Lesl

I know. It’s a bummer, they were great.

Those are what i was talking about. Do check them out, they’re gorgeous. Reuben also makes great flute/whistle stands, which in my humble opinion, are the best investment you can make, to not have to worry someone will sit or step on your flute or whistle when you go get a beer.

Oooooooooh - a photo - you might have noticed that I don’t even have an avatar yet - I’m not up to speed on computers and photos yet - I’ll see what I can do since hubby has a digital camera - otherwise I’ll pm you with a more detailed description.
Sarah

That would be great. I’ve made a few different soft cases. Its my hobby.
But nowhere to keep everything together. I don’t know how to do the
photo stuff either yet!
Cheers, Lesl

Funny this subject comes up now.
My keyed Cotter flute came with a case - very nice and sturdy wooden thing, but it literally weighs many times the weight of the flute. After having travelled with it twice the last month I just knew I had to get something else.
Having read all the U.S. people’s comments on guncases, and having seen Jens’ that came with his Copley flute I set out to find one here in Copenhagen.
Now around these promiscuous parts one doesn’t find guncases in sports shops, no sirree! So I visited a couple of shops that sell hunting supplies. The gave me funny looks - no pistols… perhaps I should not have mentioned anything about flutes; it must have been confusing

So, I ended up in this tiny, unventilated basement shop. Surrounded my army trousers and dimly lit displays of knives I explained to the shopowner about my quest. He showed me some cases and asked whether i was interested in some Uzi’s perhaps.
I quickly took one of his larger cases, paid and made a run for the exit - instinctively ducking for cover and making one of these movie-explosion inspired dives across the street. :sunglasses:

The case is quite big. As big as the drumstick bag I was using for my whistles before. But it actually houses my flute, 3 whistles, minidisc player and microphone.

I’ll put up some pictures later.

Salute,
Jeroen

Hi Jeroen,

Congrats on the flute/gun case! Great story BTW; which gun shop did you go to?

Cheers,
Jens

I have 2 pics of my new guncase up here: http://www.pbase.com/pixyy/flute_case

Jens,
It was the little shop on Gammeltorv - it’s called “City Guns”, or something creative like that
