I’m sure I’ve seen threads about cases before but, a quick search found nothing.
I used to supply my keyed flutes with a “bags” flute case. It was the only off the peg case that I could find that fitted a wooden flute without modification. They are now unavailable, they are listed on a couple of shop’s websites but , none in stock.
Any suggestions?
I don’t mind a bit of modification but I don’t fancy making them myself.

How about Cavallaro roll bags? I’ve gotten a couple of flutes packed in them.

And there’s always the pistol cases that Hammy Hamilton, Dave Copley and others provide.
I found the perfect case in the clearance stuff at Target! It is a portable DVD case (you know, the kind that have the flip-up viewing screen). Anyway, all I had to do was cut the appropriate-sized slots out of some foam rubber (JoAnn’s fabrics carries it) and I was golden! The other good point is that is has a couple of pockets for swabs, etc. I did have to cut off a few straps - I think they were designed to attach to the back of a car seat.

Doskocil Pistol Cases. They’re ugly, but they’re cheap and so far seemingly virtually indestructable. I don’t know if they work for Pratten types – although maybe there’s a slightly larger size? – but my Murray fits just right.
I use “Stagg” drum stick bags for my keyless flutes, these look identical to the flute roll and cost half the price.
I don’t think that they give enough protection to the keys.
I’ll check out the DVD case, the pistol case could be good but, I’m not sure how easy they are to get in the UK.
The nylon cover from my son’s old “Trapper Keeper” notebook.
It has a few pockets, decent cushioning and enough room for a flute, a few whistles, a swab, and odds and ends. The flute parts get wrapped in cloth dinner napkins.
Here it is on Amazon US; it didn’t show up on Amazon.co.uk, but maybe you can buy here and have shipped there without too much trouble?
Sam Murray in Galway has shipped his new flutes out in Remington-type pistol cases, but I don’t know where he gets them.
Anyway, you gotta love the price on the Doskocil!
I got mine from David Copley; I’ve kept a keyed flute in it for several years and traveled all over the place with no trouble. The only drawback is the aesthetics …
I don’t much trust flute rolls, but my flutes see a little hard travel here and there so I just can’t believe they’re OK in those things for anything but home storage – especially, like you said, the keyed ones. But I’m kinda paranoid that way (ask anyone to whom I’ve shipped a flute
).
Good luck!
I can get pistol cases and the price is quite good.
I’m looking for something a bit more stylish.
If the outlay isn’t too crippling I might look into getting aluminium cases made for me.
In a past discussion of cases, I mentioned what I’ve been using:
Some other ideas can be found here: http://www.firescribble.net/flute/cases.htm
The aluminum “2 pistol” cases might be just the thing for you. Just look up your local gun shop, they usually have a good selection. That way you don’t have to pay freight.
PRO TEC makes a nice case.
The ones I’ve had came with movable blocks that made them very adaptable.

I might be able to get them on line but, “local gunshops” are not too comon here in the uk.
My fault for putting something silly in for my location.
Sillydill, I’ll take alook at the protec case. Previous evperience has been that cases intended for a boehm flute are too closely fitted to hold anything else. The “Bags” case was an exception.
I have modified a couple of silver flute hard cases. I got them from music shops, one for free and the other for $2. I cut along the edge, removed the cloth, used a wood chisel to remove the parts (the cross pieces) I didn’t want, and then replaced then cloth. I like them better than my Cavello for long trips, especially when flying. I think they provide the best protection. I put in a damp-it if I am going somewhere very dry, such as my trip to Maine last week. I know a couple of people who use gun cases and like them. I tried a couple and couldn’t find one I liked. The flute case is smaller, takes up less room and there are less questions when flying. I never been asked to open mine and one friend spent a bit of time explaining his gun case.
Cheers:)

mine did not have movable blocks, but i just unscrewed the cover, tore off the fabric, cut the styrofoam, and assembled it back together; i never glued the fabric back down and i have never had as problem. i especially find the strap very handy!
Why not make your own timber cases? And charge a little extra premium for a ‘hand made case’ If you have a table saw and router with suitable bit (various options), you’d knock out basic cases fairly easily. The hardest bit would doing the first - the prototype. After that, you’d just do a batch of 10 or 20 or whatever and cut/ mill the joints together. You’d make 20 doing them in a batch in the same time as doing 2-3 individually.

Pat, this sounds interesting. Is there any chance you could take a photo of your case so that I can see what it is I’m looking for?
i have too of the hardwood flute cases that are options when you buy a flute from terry mcgee. they’re really nicely made and nice to look at, and fit my keyed ‘d’ flute and keyless ‘c’ flute perfectly. not cheap though, but in my case worth it in the long run.
forgot to put the link with the photo of the cases:

My thats pricey.
I bought a total beater flute off ebay with a really nice case.
12 bux shipping included. ![]()
Deals are out there.
I got a nice English wood box with my 8 key Wylde but it rattles about in it and that flute never leaves my side so its needed a bit more packing.
I picked up a 19thC Meyer case (the flat pill-ish looking leather ones) for pennies and refurbished it myself.
Nothing new hinges, a little leather dye and polish can’t fix. I even fixed the little lock.
Flute fits nice and it really looks money now.
I keep it in one of those black ProTech bags (get one they are great) with the big side pocket. Plenty room for flute a bunch of whistles, tuner, digital recorder, silver polish rag, trench knife, M1911 and extra .45 ACP magazines.
Don’t sneek up on me btw.
