For the longest time, I’ve been using an old boot lace wrapped around my stock and over my shoulder to raise my B kit up. I have a wrap-around bass reg, so that might explain the absolute necessity for me (even at 6’1) to need a strap. Needless to say, the current yoke cuts into to my shoulder.
Does anyone have any better ideas that they’d like to share? If it’s something made from rare “unobtain-ium” …please…skip it.
Firstly, try using a longer connector hose between your bellows and bag. This will push the bag further to your left (if you’re a right-handed piper) and make access to the keys easier.
Secondly, try tying the boot lace around the stock and then around one of the belt loops of your trousers (on the left side if you’re a right-handed piper). If you tie it in right, the stock will stay at a steady position.
Finally, if you really want to use a shoulder strap, buy a camera strap. They’re usually thin, but padded and comfortable.
I’ve tried Sax neck straps and they don’t get short enough. I play banjo (that strap is long than the sax neck strap) and I think that’d be a worse situation..unless you know of someone who uses it. The camera idea might work.
I know this may sound odd, but I have used a regular belt. I have tried banjo accordion, luggage, camera straps and the regular belt works just as good or better than any of them.
Just be careful when you stand up.
I have one set (D) with a U bend bass reg and another (C#) set
with the straight bass reg. I personally think I like the straight reg for this
reason.
The best I’ve seen, and used, is a thick leather shoe lace type deal. Tied into a strip of rectangular leather to go on the shoulder. There are holes in either end of this rectangle to pass the “lace” through and tie in a knot. Adjust length to suit. Also to make this set up work at it’s optimum loop it through itself around the stock. I saw this set up most recently on a beautiful new set by Bill Haneman.
The simplest things are the hardes to explain sometimes
You could always tie the stock in lower down, then it’ll sit on your lap and you won’t need a shoelace. As you might remember, that’s how I do it. Works for some people.
