Shoulder Strap for Uillean

Hi all

I saw a couple of videos on you tube that the fellows playing the Uilleann pipes have a thin strap or cord of something that they pulled over their left shoulder, the bag side, .. I am wondering if this is to hold up the bag or the weight of a full set.

Can someone tell me where they would hook the cord/strap/belt to , eg bag , stock etc etc..

My bag is always sliding down and after watching the video it came to mind., “Geez, thats a good idea” IS IT ??

thanks
Johnnie

Here is the link to a video of Mick O’Brien playing a full set. He puts a cord or something on his left shoulder right near the start of the video as he is getting ready to play. Is this common?

I believe its usually connected around the stock. I don’t use one because I sometimes intentionally lower the bag when playing regs. If the strap was there it would restrict movement.

Try it out with a piece of cord and see what works for you.

Howaya Johnnie,

The strap helps with bigger sets that are in lower pitches. I use one with my B set but find I don’t need to with the D set.

Happy Christmas!

Patrick.

And if your bag is sliding down all the time then that may also speak to your previous issue of getting a kink in the neck of the bag. Perhaps a strap will help you a great deal.

Merry Christmas,
Paul

P.S. Check your pm’s

I always used a shoulder strap. The nice thing about it is that the regulators are always in exactly the same place, which is useful if you close your eyes while playing solo.

AH great

Where do you run the strap? Around both the stock and the blow pipe or just the stock? If not, where?

Thanks
Johnnie

Just the stock.

Actually, if you’re asking about Uillmann’s set up, one end of the strap attaches to the stock and the other end attaches to the top corner of the bag itself. I believe he has glued a piece of leather there in the form of a loop into which the other end is tied. The advantage is that it puts the bag closer to the fulcrum of the lever of one’s arm so that maximum pressure can be applied with minimal effort. It’s really a pretty neat set up.
