Standard Sheet Music -> ABC Notation?

I’ve been using Michael Eskin’s tools for ABC conversions, transposing, editing ABC, etc. I can’t tell you how useful these tools are for a project I’m currently working on. Thank you, Michael!

Meanwhile, I have one question – are there computer programs that convert standard musical notation (staff notation) automatically to ABC?

Like where I could upload a JPG or PNG file with a standard score on it, and the computer would scan that and output ABC notation?

Also, is there any way for me to play a tune on a flute, and have the sound captured and converted to a standard musical notation score (or ABC)?

Thank you.

I’ve done this with a piece I composed myself, when a mate asked for the dots. I used the Folkfriend app to transcribe it a line at a time, which turned out to be both accurate and easy for a single 32-bar tune.

If you need to capture longer pieces or do this regularly, one of the specialist music apps would be much less clunky. I think some of them can also scan staff notation and convert to ABC. Can’t make any recommendations because I haven’t needed to try any of them, but I’m sure some of the other members will know.

Thank you, Moof, for your adice. I’ll look into the FolkFriend app, and I might try directly inputting ABC, which seems simpler and quicker to scribble than standard sheet music. Cheers.

If you can do that, it’s much quicker. You’ll pick up the syntax very quickly, and if you compose directly into Michael’s website, you can see what you’re writing as you do it – any mistakes will be obvious.
