Can anyone recommend software for editing ABC notation? I’d like to transpose sheet music into whistle keys. Retyping ascii files gets tedious after a while. ![]()
ABCMUS will transpose abc files. It is a nice program for $10.00 USD.
Melody Assistant is a full featured midi editor that will convert midi files to abc files. (you can transpose the midi files first) I think it is 35 USD. I am sure there are other fantastic programs but am familiar with these.
Since its on-topic (gasp), I have frequently tried to cut and paste abc notation from this and other sites into barfly but when I try and view the notes, its says there is “no midi file”. What am I doing wrong?
I have opened a NEW file, and saved with a title and all. Is there some other stage I am missing?
Thanks! I’ll check those programs out.
Sorry. I don’t know much about barfly.![]()
I got this program called ABC2Win. I’m tickled to death with it! It automatically opens an ABC file and sets it up for you, then you can go in and change whatever you want. Then you click on the little note up in the corner and it puts it all into notation. Then you click on the little speaker icon and it plays a basic midi of how it would sound just the way you have it. You can’t print anything until you register…I think it’s $20.
I changed the whole key of “O’Connell’s Lamentation” and it sounded terrible, but it did it!

That’s the program I was playing with last night. When I change the key signature, the key changes alright but the notes don’t. I was playing back some pretty weird sounding midi files. So I had to go back and change the note…er…notation to get it to sound right. Actually I only changed the first bar or so just to see if I got it right. It worked and I ended up with a half-and-half midi file! ![]()

You could print it by hitting the “Print Screen SysReq” button of your keyboard then pasting the page into Paint. Of course you’d have to do some trimming in Paint. And if the entire piece isn’t on screen at once, you may need to open multiple instances of Paint. The print quality would only be so-so.

I’m thinking the reason my changes turned out so weird was because it was too radical of a change. I think the original was in G Major and I turned it into a D. You could still tell it was O’Connell’s Lamentation.
Perhaps a key change that turns something from C to D might not be so radical? Like my Morning Has Broken was in C and transposed to D without any problem…

I found some shareware called ABC Tools at http://www.magma.ca/~scarlett/abc/ that will transpose the notes!
What I’ve been doing so far is use ABC Tools to transpose the key and then play the tune back in ABC2Win.
