music software question

Hello everyone!

I’m a beginner with a low G and soon will have a low F whistle. Aside from ITM, I hope to find some other types of music to play - such as classical, renaissance, etc. I had music lessons as a child and can read music, but don’t know enough theory to transpose.

Do you know of any software that will do this?

Also, I have the movie soundtrack from “Ever After” with a beautiful little high whistle tune in it. I’d love to learn it, but…how? I don’t know what key it’s in, and have…sadly…never learned anything by ear. Do you have any suggestions? (hopefully - some magical program that will print out a copy of the tune for me!)

Search for

MID2ABC

It’s a free midi - abc - midi converter that will transpose an abc tune,
or import a midi file or tune and convert it to ABC, then transpose it.

You can use the abc file at http://www.concertina.net/tunes_convert.html
if you like, to get a pdf, midi, etc

Alternatively, use something like MidiNotate to print out sheet music
from the midi file.

OR…

Draw the music staves/lines etc
and move the notes up by the same semitones from what you have
to what you want e.g. if you move a B up to D, move all the other notes up by the same amount on the lines. Don’t forget b’s and #'s.

Or if the tune is written in say D, then just treat the whistle you’ve got as
though it was a D , then you’ll play in whatever key the whistle is in
e.g. G, but be reading from the D score.

Try Noteworthy Composer (free version is for evaluation only, music is set out left-to-right on one line only, not page by page), or Finale Notepad (this is the free part of the Finale suite).

It’s tedious to learn to enter tunes, but gets faster as you learn more. Finale has good help to get to know how to use it.

There are others too, eg Sibelius, but they tend to be expensive.
