How deep do you want to go??
If it’s just a few pieces, contact Seth Gallagher:
http://www.uilleann.com
He can sell you cane slips that have been split and gouged, ready for sanding and shaping.
Thanks…
I had been ordering cane for basoon for making reeds for my smallpipes (found good plastic reeds for that, so abandoned reed making for a while) and didn’t think that would do for UP. I’m just beginning Uilleann pipes. I play highland pipes and those smallpipes I mentioned. My highland fingering keeps creeping in.
I wonder if anyone else on this forum plays both and started with GHB?
Dave Jones
Dave,
I was a competing GHB piper in Scotland until ill health forced me to give up.I play smallpipes too,(Hamish Moore in A) and I am learning Uilleann Pipes at the moment on a Ray Sloan half set. I know what you mean about changing over from Highland to Uilleann, my biggest frustration though is changing pressure on the bag. After nearly 40 years spent trying to keep the pressure constant, I’m having to do a bit of “unlearning”. Having fun trying though!
If you can wait about a year you can probably order from:
“Joseph, Cane Czar of the Great Southland” ![]()
Somebody say something? Hmmmm?
I have cane curing, harvested on the 6th of February 2005… so by my calculations… lesse… ummm, carry the 2, subtract the… yup, about 2 and 1/2 years this new batch ought to be ready or pretty darn close. ![]()
I do have nearly cured cane from last years’ harvest, which had already spent about a year before that drying. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.
Are you looking for chanter or drone reed cane?
Joseph:
I don’t need any at the moment, I just thought I’d heard something about ‘Joseph raising cane down in Florida’… ![]()
… and a few blisters to boot! ![]()

No doubt due to the ‘blistering’ pace of your fingers on that newer chanter of yours! ![]()
Seriously though, I have enjoyed the tunes you posted on Clips n’ Snips, your pipes sound nice to me. Maybe one of these days I’ll post a tune or two as a public service, so everybody can feel even better about their own playing ![]()
Don’t be too unsure about yourself. I look forward to your postings. As for me, I’m just a hack at it. Someday, when I have spent more than a year and a half at it, I might be OK. ![]()
Nothing a good caning won’t cure! ![]()

Joseph I appreciate the encouragement and I have no intentions of giving up (Collective groan heard throughout the household and the whimpering of a dog is heard…). I’ll definitely get around to posting something…maybe an original composition like “Hackers Horpipe”! ![]()
I like the sound of it. ![]()
