can i make a reeds from the cane that bassoon player use???
Yes, you can. I use 1" diameter bassoon cane for reeds for my smallpipes and Uilleann pipes.
I was under the impression that Bassoon cane was of a much smaller diameter when I was searching for a local source of Arundo Donax at one time. Most of the time bassoon reed suppliers would balk when I asked for A.D. at a one inch diameter size. Which is why I eventually just bought a giant box of A.D. reeds from Spain.
What you want is appx 1" diameter Arundo Donax of at least 3&1/2 inches (Tim Britton style reeds) or at least 4&1/2" (“standard” reeds) length.

I would think a guy named “REEDER” would know what he’s talking about ![]()

My mistake.. I was looking for drone cane. Bassoonist cane is indeed around 25-26mm. Runs around US$25 per pound for spanish and 18 per pound for Californian via local sources. You can get it cheaper directly from the Spanish sources.

When I first ordered 1" diameter bassoon cane. the clerk who took my oredered asked someone if they had that size and the reply was, “That’s for bagpipes”. If I remember correctly tube cane for bassoon reeds is larger in diameter than what we need which is probably why bassoon reed suppliers don’t stock a lot of it.
Just for the record, I don’t do justice to my last name. I make reeds only when absolutely necessary. I greatly prefer playing tunes to almost anything.
just to be sure! i ask if i can make a CHANTER REED with basson cane.
Yes, I assumed that we were talking chanter reeds here. By the way. I was able to obtain tube cane from the Charles Double Reed Company in New Hampshire, USA. www.charlesmusic.com
John Liestman’s book on Northumbrian pipes list several sources for reed making supplies, etc.
Dionys hi,
Do you have phone numbers/email/web page information for your cane sources? Also, what hardness do you ask for?
Best Regards,
