Just made a recording with my new Ironwood McGee GLP. Couple of quick reels, Fisherman’s Lilt and Monoghan’s Twig. Interested in feedback. I think this flute has bite for such a small-holed flute.

How does it do in sessions, any idea?
Nice playing, but i don’t like the sound of the GLP, sorry.. I can’t really put my finger on it, but i like more vibrant “darker” sound. The GLP sounds, for lack of better description ‘clinical’ IMO
I really like the crisp clarity of the ornamentation you are getting from this small holed flute. I like the sound of this flute more than the keyed GLP that I had tried once at a session.

tone quality is not what I like but it’s no reflection on your playing.
There’s something about that tone of that flute that comes across as sterile. It lacks the buzz or sweetness that I’d like to hear in a flute I would play. Then again each to his own.
Nice playing, Jason. It’s been said many times before here that it is very hard to make a qualitative judgement of flute tone by listening to an audio clip on the internet. There are just too many variables in the mix that affects how the flute may sound to the listener.
First off, very nice playing Jason! To the matter of the sample file, a lot of the sound clips I hear on box.net seem suspect to me. Does Box somehow compress files when you upload like YouTube does with video? They all seem to sound very spatially compressed and there’s no natural ambiance (reverb). It’s almost as if the flute was being played in a room with foam placed all over the walls to absorb any ambient noise. I’ve played an original Firth Hall & Pond that used to belong to Grey Larson and I can tell you that it sounded warm woody and very nice. Not as loud as some flutes but not sterile at all. I’m sure that Terry’s copy wouldn’t be that far off from the original.

Jason… lovely playing. You just got this flute, right? I think I shall hold off on commenting until you have had a chance to sit with the flute awhile… perhaps you would consider revisiting these tunes in a few weeks?

Thanks for all the comments and the honesty about the GLP tone. I’d say I feel more satisfied with the tone live than recorded, but it’s hard to tell what exactly one hears when playing versus how one perceives sound when listening to a recording.
As far as playing it in sessions, I have been doing so every week and it has solid volume and presence. It’s loud enough, pretty loud actually, as loud as my Burns Standard. Takes less air so playing long sets is easier and I don’t tire much after 2-3 hours of playing. Overall I’m very happy with the flute.
