Just want to share with the world my enthusiasm about my beautiful new McGee GLP flute. After 20 years of Boehm flute playing and a couple of years on whistles I decided I “needed” a wooden, simple system flute.
My budget - and common sense - told me to start at the inexpensive end, but living just 50 minuted drive from Terry McGee was just too big a temptation to resist. Plus having a hand made in Australia instrument to go with my beautiful Mitch Smith handmade Ozwhistle seemed like the perfect duo.
It was great being able to visit Terry and try all the different models, (Terry was VERY patient ) such an advantage over having to decide via the internet.
I’ve only had my flute for a couple of weeks, but am very happy with my decisions. Now the hard work begins - practising to do justice to this beautiful istrument.
Thanks Terry, - and thanks to all the folk on this list who have already taught me so much. (I’ve been lurking here for the past 12 months - learning in advance.)
Which embouchure style did you choose? And it’s blackwood? With the MDT or slide? Just curious. One of these days I’d like to try the GLP–wish Terry was just down the road from me.
I had to sell mine (MDT, blackwood, elliptical) to help pay for my new keyed Copley, but I am still of the opinion that the GLP is the BEST keyless flute “out there”. If I could have afforded it, I would have moved to a 6-key GLP instead of my 4-key Copley. Someday, I’ll get my 6-key GLP and then I will FINALLY quit “shopping” (maybe )…
Congrats! You will NOT regret it! I wish I could meet Terry in person, but I feel like I know him a bit from the MANY emails I’ve bugged him with!
Hi Jason.
It is Blackwood and I splurged on the tuning slide because this IS going to be my long term flute (don’t laugh all you flute collectors!)
I actually found it hard to hear a difference when I played the different embouchures. Terry kindly let me bring home both the rounded rectangle and theimproved eliptical head joints with my new flute before I decided. I found ease of playing and volume was similar for me, and not much difference in tone but I kept leaning towards the eliptical and that’s the one I have kept.
I understand your dilemma about deciding at a distance - If I hadn’t had the opportunity to try I would have gone with the rounded rectangle. I did read one comment though - on this list I think - that all Terry’s embouchure styles are great, - choose one and learn to play it and you will be happy. Sounds like good advice to me
Congratulations Taminka you made a great choice IMO.
I have played many many tooters and and have been astounded at the quality and performance of many many tooters but of all the “fishies in the sea”, none compels me and moves me like my own GLP.
Would love to hear more specifics from you, Doc, or others who have spoken so highly of the GLP. I am curious, with the smaller finger holes, is it also capable of the tonal qualities of “honk” and “buzz” of the larger hole models?
Anyone care to post a sound clip contrasting a GLP and, say, a large hole pratten, playing a ripping reel?
My GLP Eb is the bomb!
Its as responsive as an old Porsche Speedster!
I keep the headpiece rolled way in for that great bark!
