[SOLD]: Paddy Ward Delrin D flute!

The flute is SOLD, thanks.

Hi folks,

I just ran into a Burns Boxwood flute unexpectedly (and I wasn’t looking for one-but I’ve wanted to try one for a while!), so I’ve got to sell something now to balance the musical budget.

The price is what I paid for it recently from Doc Jones, $750, but I will include Priority Mail Insured shipping (worth about $18.00) in the price for the continental USA only, though I will consider shipping it elsewhere at additional cost. This is a flute not to be missed!

The Ward is a wonderful flute-and I’ll probably regret selling it later, but the Burns secrets aren’t opening up to me as quickly as I like (and I don’t like the tone as much as the Ward right now), and I think I need to spend some time playing it to really see what it’s all about. It’s a very tough choice, since the Ward and Burns Boxwood flutes are equally hard to come by, but I know the Ward plays great for me, and hopefully I can reconnect sometime in the future with one, and hopefully that is as nice as this one.

It plays as easily as any flute I’ve owned (including my Copley), and it has an expressive range of tone that is not typical of many flutes, in my experience. The tone seems to be a perfect cross between a Rudall and Pratten, and is based on a Hawkes design. I believe it is clearly worth paying extra for (once you see and play it I think you’ll agree), for a Delrin flute, comparing the qualities of the Seery and M&E flutes to it. It plays like a professional instrument, as well as being crafted like one, in all the details.

Paddy Ward apparently dislikes working in Delrin as much as the next flutemaker, and is concentrating on keyed flutes, so the Delrins are hard to come by, and I imagine as well as any flute he has made. There are small numbers of his flutes out there in players hands, but the feedback on them is clearly very positive.

I especially like being able to play in tune (up to pitch) without blasting at a high volume-if you tend to play flat, this flute will allow you to play in tune with little effort. The craftsmanship, I think is up there with the best flutemakers wooden flutes, and the tone and timbre is very much like Blackwood (deep and throaty), but maybe a little darker-not quite as bright. A very seductive flute! Paddy’s website is here for more info and pictures:

Anyway, I don’t like letting it go, but I think I need to spend time with the Burns to find out more about it, and this is the only alternative I’ve come up with-to sell the Ward now. (I’ve had no interest in my guitars for sale on the Stringed Instrument forum as yet).

PayPal is welcome (including credit cards) if you add the 3.5%, otherwise, US Postal Money order, cashier’s bank check, or possible personal check if I know you.

The condition, by the way is almost like new, with only a scratch here and there from normal use. It’s a very pretty flute-nice big silver rings, and a high polish!

Email is suggested rather than PM’s. Thank you!

Yes, today it seems I’m starting to connect with the Burns Boxwood, but it feels like I’m just getting a glimpse of it, so as much as I love the sound and easy playability of the Ward, I’m going to let it go (I’ve been struggling with that for a bit now).

If you like, I’ll give you a 3 day trial period on the Ward (you pay shipping to and from if you don’t like it)-but I can only do this in the USA. If you want it outside of the USA, that’s OK, but the sale would be final. But I don’t think anyone would be unhappy with it once they have played it. It really is something, and considering it is made from Delrin. I still think I prefer its tone over the Burns, but I know I’ve got to work with it a while to really know it.

PS If you need a performance flute and you live in a very dry or humid climate-this is it! It’s definitely a pro level flute, and it would suit those conditions extremely well, and also as a top notch travel or session flute, with no cares about the wood, with the same level and flexibility of tone you get from a wooden flute. Seriously! There aren’t many Delrins about like Paddy’s.

If your embouchure isn’t fully developed, this will work for you-it’s an easy player, but if your embouchure is developed, you’ll probably be surprised how much flexibility of tone you can get out of the Ward by varying your embouchure.

So, thanks-email me with any interest or questions.

PSS If my ship comes in, it won’t be for sale!!! ; )

Well, the Ward just went out for a 3 day trial, but I will keep it up for sale until I know it’s found a home for certain! So, if you are still interested, email me anyway and let me know. That way you will have a place if others respond also.

Thanks!

Killer flute and lovely fellow.

Doc

Thanks, Doc, glad you aren’t dyslexic!

The flute is back (well tomorrow it will be), as the other interested party decided to keep his Ward Blackwood instead-but said it was a very tough decision between them!

Still available, though it is hard to part with it. One heck of a flute, and it just happens to be made of Delrin!
