Any piper’s planning to go to the South Carolina Irish Arts Weekend? If so, is there interest in getting a South East Uilleann Piper’s Club session together? -gary
SC Irish Arts Weekend: Come experience the living tradition of Irish music ~ All are welcome! Friday, June 22 through Sunday, June 24 at the Columbia Museum of Art.
The Redbird School of Irish Music has invited several talented regional and local musicians to share their extensive knowledge of the Irish Tradition with our community.
The weekend begins Friday, June 22nd at 7pm, with a concert by our staff musicians at the Museum of Art auditorium. We continue on Saturday and Sunday with workshops covering many of the aspects of Irish traditional music.
Workshops are open to all levels of musicians and some workshops require no musical experience. Our talented staff:
- Julee Glaub and Mark Weems from Durham, NC will teach Irish Traditional Song, the History of Irish Song in America, and Bodhran (Irish drum).
- Jeff Thomas, concertina player and maker, currently residing in Frostburg, MD will teach tunes and techniques for concertina.
- Multi-instrumentalist, Mike Simpson from Atlanta, GA will teach Irish fiddle and penny whistle.
- Columbia native, Steve Bennett will instruct students on the Tenor Banjo and Mandolin, as well as co-teaching the Irish Tune Accompaniment for guitar, bouzouki and octave mandolin.
- Davey Mathias, also a Columbia local, will co-teach the Irish Tune Accompaniment workshop.
- Local author and scholar, Finnbarr Dunphy, originally from Dublin, Ireland, will emcee out Friday concert, offer free Irish Gaelic classes and invites us to a book reading and signing from his newly released novel, “The Harp That Once”.
The SC Irish Arts Weekend offers not only concert and workshop experiences, but also a chance to meet, chat, and play music with instructors and fellow musicians at sessions and gatherings throughout the weekend.
