set of pipes for sale

hi all,
i have a full concert D pitch set in brass and blackwood for sale, made by Chris Bayley 2004 ,the set has a nice mellow tone,
selling price around £2500 i can send picures to any intrested party.

Is it a three or four regulator set ?

Pictures would be good - I believe there are a number of online sites where you can host them and then reference them onto the forum.

hi again,
chris has emailed me to say that he would put some photos of the pipes on
its a 3 reg set by the way

hi all
i think i’ve done this right, heres a couple of pictures of the pipes

tramaluk, check your PM’s.

The Bayley sets look very like A.Froment’s work…is their any conncetion between the two makers?

The regulator keys have a Dave Williams air to them for me. The chanter, Taylor, like Barry O’Neill’s.

PD.

The little cap on the bottom of the chanter is interesting. I’ve not seen that before.

Doc

It’s a popping valve. Ensures a tight seal when the chanter is on the knee. No need for a popping strap.

Popping valves are great fun. Easy project for someone who wants to add one to their chanter.

Do you have plans for a DIY popping valve? If so, I’d be interested to learn more.

Thanks.

By the way, Chris, that’s a very nice looking set of pipes (pictured above).

Thanks PJ - just one of my standard 3 regulator sets.

Some more pictures of the set

Design has no connection with AF or DW - keys are not cast but bandsawn from 1/8" brass sheet and then rounded on the linisher. I went over to using heavier keywork with rounded edges many years ago after I saw a piper slice his hand open on knife edged regulator keys by another maker.

Chanter is loosely based on the style of the Taylors with long block mounts e.g. as Pat says Barry O’Neills, Sean Folsom etc. with some ‘improvements’ of my own such as the lower hand thumb rest.

Are you serious - do you have any gory photos

John

Heh- just noticed this from looking at the photos from Chris Bayley and from tramaluk- the stop key on the chanter head is on the front side of the chanter in tramaluk’s photos (the front being the side with 7 holes), and seems to run down the back on Chris Bayley’s photo…

I look waaaayyyyyyyy to hard at stuff…

LotS - If you look hard enough you will see it is too short for the front position and is designed rear placement. When the key is released the chanter will sound and it is better to have a d than a c#. There are supposedly experienced makers out there that will tell you it should be on the front and rear placement is wrong so it looks like the Taylors, Brown, Henelly, Brennan etc. and more recent makers such as Howard and myself have got it all wrong

No but I have some of the style of regulator key that caused the injury - will see if I can find them

Chris

Not to mention Egan and Coyne  (who used rear placement)

Chris- it did look a little short to me- is the air intake just rotated around to the other side then on tramaluk’s photo? I’ve never used a cap with a stop key, so is the “intake piece” just hemped, and can be moved around?

I’m also interested in seeing keys that could cut your hand open! I could imagine taylor-esque keys that were not smoothed over or extremely thin doing the job there…

Ye can turn the head of the the chanter wi a key on to suit yersel much as ye adjust the head of a chanter without a key to adapt to your particular hand. Back, front, sideways…
Why do ye want to “cut your hand open”? :boggle:
