Giving up -> half set for sale

Uillean pipes half set for sale

The following is a short description; if you have any spesific questions, just ask in this thread or send me an e-mail.

This is what I’m selling, and the package is just as when I bought it:

  • A half set with three dones, upgradable to having regulators fitted - holes drilled and plugged.
  • Two chanters, both with C natural keys. One of the chanters is made by Chris Bayley (the chanter has a brand new chanter-top).
  • bellows - I don’t know the maker. It has a brass hinge and works perfectly.
  • An unused hard case

Originally bought from Michael Hulme for £ 1255 in summer last year, with shipping included. I have found a leak in the mainstock, not in the fitting, but somewhere else, but haven’t had the time to really look over it. I don’t have the knowledge to get the set in tune - therefore I have no idea what’s to be done. Not too many months ago, the set played beautifully - drones and chanter were in tune, but now, without living close to piper, I can’t get them in tune by myself. The non-Chris Bayley chanter has a brand new reed. If you’re a beginner, I’d make sure that you have someone to help you get the set in tune before buying. I don’t know what to do, and I’m selling it as it is.

Why am I selling it?
I don’t have to knowledge to get the set in tune by myself, and there’s no one close by to help me. The main reason, though, is that I don’t have time to dedicate to this lovely instrument. With lack of time and soon also a appropriate place to practise, I’m forced to being stuck to my whistles.

Be aware of a leak. It’s somewhere within the red circle on this picture.

I’m not completely sure of the price, but somewhere around that four-figured number would be assumable. £ 1000, that is. Remember, I’ve barely used the set, and it comes with two chanters and a hard case. I’m open to discuss the price. Give me an offer. The set is in Norway, and I’d like payment through either PayPal or a transfer to my account number.

Please ask for further details. For pictures and description from the previous owner, you may look at the original eBay ad.

Original post:
Yeah, that’s it. Without actually ever gotten the chance to PLAY, I’m forcing myself to sell my half set. I guess I should admire the Uillean pipes and the ones who master them rather than trying to play the instrument myself.

I have too many interests to cultivate, and since learning the pipes without doubt is the one that takes the most time and dedication, I, with regret, have to give it up. I never got to play it because I never got the darn thing in tune. There are no pipers around to help me, and whatever help I’ve given online haven’t helped me, sorry.

I don’t have time to give any details about the set right now, but please take a look at the original eBay page to get a good look at it.

I’ll give you details later on.

"I don’t have time to give any details about the set right now, but please take a look at the original eBay page to get a good look at it. "

Well, if that is your attitude, you may be about as successful as a vendor as you were a piper.

So what’s the story with Keith Powell and how does the “C I R” above the stamped shamrock on the chanter fit in with that provenance?

That thar is a B not an R even my tired ol eyes can see that :boggle:
given that there is quite a lot of detail on the EBay page I think ye are being a wee bit harsh…I’ve taken the liberty of helping Ostekjeks out a bit (I’m that kinda guy)and reproduced it for him good luck wi the sale and can I have 10% commission please..ta very much

A half set of Uilleann Pipes, fully mounted in Blackwood, Brass and Artificial Ivory. Pitched in D, and absolutely in tune at A=440 Hz. The chanter is unstamped, but attributed to Keith Powell. A C natural key has been fitted, and the blocks are present to allow further keys to be added if required. The chanter is of the Rowsome pattern, and is quite loud. A new reed has been fitted. The bag is leather, double welted and sewn and is airtight. The bellows are of oak and leather with a leather elbow pad and a wooden body support and are very comfortable. The drones were refurbished by Chris Bayley in Redhill, are fitted with new reeds, and provide a nice harmonic buzz to the set. The set was built in 1997; this information was found on the original engraved metal sheath surrounding the mainstock. The sheath was removed to improve the set cosmetically.
This would be an excellent upgrade for someone moving up from a practice set.

Additionally, should you require a set with Chanter and Drones by one named maker, I am offering a matching Chris Bayley Chanter body with C natural key, stamped by the maker and fully mountable for four additional keys for a very reasonable £150. Photos are attached.

Postage will be at cost, and is FREE to anyone using the Buy It Now option. Alternatively, the purchaser is welcome to pick up the pipes at the St. Chartier Festival in France (13th - 16th July) and meet one of the makers involved.

I have the same model Chris Bayley Taylor style chanter. Fitted with a proper reed, it screams nicely and in tune… true to the Taylors I’ll warrant.

This set looks to me like a Cillian O’Briain set before he got into the ribbon key skullduggery.

Pat.

The CIB with the shamrock is Chris Bayley’s mark. I have the same marks on my Bb chanter by him.

Ah here, uilleam, you already knew it was a “B”, no sport in that–and if your eyes are tired, your lip is makin’ up for them! :stuck_out_tongue:

Is the rest of the set by him too or is it just the chanter?

Pat.

ps**.Ostekjeks** ye should maybe say how much ye want for them(that way I can work oot ma commission  )

Naaah. I’ve seen a couple of old (late '80s?-early '90s) Ó Bríain sets up close and they don’t really look like that one there…He was just into a different kind of skullduggery back then…He also fed his cigarette butts to goats back in those days, but that’s a different story altogether…

Damn :imp: !!!

if I was a little bit more skilled on my practice set

Sorry, folks. The eBay link was only posted to show you pictures and the detailed description from the previous owner, who has lots of more experience than I have. Whatever price/shipping information that is written on the page is wrong, but YES, the extra chanter will be added.

I’ll make an ad within this day.

Erm wot aboot ma commission ?

Now, the first post is a little bit more informative.

I’m not sure I’ve read everything correctly but did Chris Bayley make the drones?

The eBay post mentions that he refurbished the drones and then says that if the buyer wants drones and chanter by the same maker, a CB chanter is included in the sale.

The original chanter is a non-Chris Bayley, but the other one, which also goes with the set, is. I don’t know about the drones, sorry.
